A Parliamentary panel of the Home Ministry has recommended that trade ties with Myanmar are very important and should continue “seamlessly” keeping in mind the Chinese presence in the region.

“Myanmar is an important neighbour which is strategically very crucial for the country, in general, and north-east India, in particular. Strategic and trade ties with Myanmar require seamless flow of traffic between Myanmar and India”, the standing committee of the Home Ministry said.

The committee said keeping the Chinese presence in mind, such projects are of national importance.

People-to-people

Besides, they can also be used for people-to-people contacts in future”, it said pointing to the recent restoration of democracy in the country.

The panel studied the current status of the road project— the Kaladan multi-model project— along the Indo-Myanmar borders, and “desired” that it be completed by July 2013.

The committee also recommended that the government of Myanmar may be persuaded to construct the road as per the National Highway standards, the report said.

It expressed its “extreme disappointment” for the procedural delays impacting the completion of the projects.
