Russian scientists have tested unique weapons which neutralize aircraft and high-precision weapons by a directed energy beam.

YEREVAN (Sputnik) — Russia has developed first radio-electronic weapons system based on so-called new physical principles, a United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation (UIMC) spokesperson told RIA Novosti on Thursday. "Real models of these weapons have been already developed and proven their effectiveness. This is a completely new type of weapon that has no equals either in this country or, we won't be afraid to say, in the world," the spokesperson said at the ArmHitec arms and defense technologies exhibition in Armenia.

First radio-electronic weapons samples based on new physical principles (beam, geophysical, wave, kinetic and other types of weapons) have been first unveiled at the closed Russian Defense Ministry exhibition on the sidelines of the Army-2016 forum last month.

The UIMC spokesperson added that the new weapons can strike targets without the use of ammunition — instead, the a directed energy beam is used.

"It has an indirect physical impact on air-borne equipment of planes and UAVs, and neutralizes high-precision weapons," he said.

Depending on the size and range it can be installed on aircraft to jam a2a or sam missile seekers of any type if it can penetrate through shielded equipment.
Also considering the waves harmful effects on pilot in the host plane it can be installed on drones if it is small enough for a short range defense system or added as a terminal defense platform to larger awacs planes shielded enough protecting the crew inside. Since awacs cant be made as stealthy as fighters or bombers it needs active protection or superior jamming.

Russia has developed and successfully tested radio-electronic weapons systems unmatched anywhere in the world, RIA Novosti reports, citing the manufacturer.

"Real prototypes of such weapons have already been created and they have proven their efficiency,” a representative of Russia’s United Instrument Manufacturing Company (OPK), which is in charge of the production, told RIA Novosti.

The new technology falls under the somewhat loose term "weapons based on new physical principles." The grouping includes armaments that employ physical processes and phenomena not generally used in modern weapons. Laser and sonic weapons are among other examples of such technology.

According to the OPK representative, the brand-new Russian system is as yet unrivaled.

“This is a completely new type of weapon, which has no analogues in our country, and I daresay, in the world."

The announcement came during the ‘Arms High-tech’ military exhibition currently taking place in Armenia. The state-of-the-art system is capable of disabling various types of targets without using the traditional rounds or shells. Instead, the weapon uses ‘directed energy.’

"It conducts indirect physical impact on the on-board equipment of aircraft or drones and neutralizes precision-guided weapons," RIA quotes the OPK representative as saying.

The weapon was for the first time presented to Russian military officials in September this year during a closed performance at the annual military expo ‘Army 2016’ outside Moscow.

In February, US Air Force General Philip Breedlove warned of the rising electronic warfare capabilities in Russia, the National Interest reported.

“They [Russia] have invested a lot in electronic warfare because they know we are a connected and precise force and they need to disconnect us to make us imprecise,” Breedlove said.

The US is working on numerous projects of non-conventional weapons, including radio, electronic, infrared and laser ones.

“We have electronic warfare capability – we probably do not have the capacity we need now,” Breedlove noted.

In April this year, Russia’s Radio-Electronic Technologies Concern (KRET) announced it has started trials of a tactical electromagnetic combat complex fully integrated with the latest air-defense systems.

The system is designed to suppress any existing and prospective airborne electronic equipment, making it impossible for the aircraft and satellites to proceed with their missions.

It needs to be tested on em shielded versions of a2a missiles both infrared and radar sensor ones as well as anti radar missiles from different ranges to see if the weapon can burn through openings like its sensors, gps recievers of anti radar missiles, bombs etc.

Aircraft is a dynamic platform so when the missile is jammed from very short range like 1km for a small amont of time plane can escape continiously changing its location.

Sam radar is stationary mostly. Land based directed emp generator should have more range disabling the guidance system of the missile and precision bomb to miss the radar from far. If it turns the precision bomb to a dumb bomb or turning missile to a rocket from 1km it can still hit nearby causing kinetic damage but from 5kms they would most likely miss. Even it cant burn through from longer ranges disabling its guidance system it can effectively jam its gps reciever and radio links in my opinion and there are already decoys that can lure out the sensors of anti radar missiles.
