I'm starting this thread to put together the projects India has undertaken to indigenously develop its arms.
This thread is not to bash Pakistan or China, and I hope we all will only discuss the indigenization efforts by India, its successes and failures and the steps taken to mitigate them in the future.
I cannot but stress the importance of this. The success of indigenization will be twofold.
First, India can provide massive employment opportunities to the youth of India, since the indigenization will create a lot of new untapped employment opportunities in a sector in which there is very limited business done in the subcontinent.
Second, India can develop its weapons that are suited best for its terrain and geo-political advantages rather than buying it from countries and adapting it to Indian conditions, which will provide a platform for the Indian scientists to invent and develop better defensive weapons suited best for the country.
Even though, India has raised its defence budget by 40%, it still doesn't amount to much, if it keeps on buying weapons in USD, but if we slowly indigenize them, then in PPP terms, we can climb the ranks faster than any other country, because of the vast amount of untapped resources that this country has.
India has taken steps in the right direction with the indigenization of the fighter jets development like the HAL Tejas and design of MCA, Arjun Tank, Missiles, Small arms and futuristic weapons like F-INSAS, UAVs like Nishant and Rustom, Energy weapons which are in concept stage like Kali.
However, all the indigenization efforts have sucked in a lot of money due to poor management efforts by the labs. Due to this, the Hal Tejas has to opt for a non-indigenous engine (Kaveri failure) and a non-indigenous radar (MMR failure).
India should not scrap these projects but the management and leadership that is leading these projects should be held accountable. I know its better said than done, but we dont have unlimited resources to put into these projects. Maybe, India should setup private defence organizations like TATA and L&T is doing, and give them contracts for productions of these weapons developed in the labs. Competition in the production will lead to quality in the manufactured equipment and India is taking a step in the right direction by offsetting part of the assembling in India to slowly and steadily develop its defence sector.
I'll post information about the various defence projects that India has undertaken in this thread and my hope is that we can discuss what should be the next steps taken by the govt to mitigate the risks and avoid cost escalations in the future.
