India's trade deficit with China rises to $53 bn

SME Times News Bureau | 29 Nov, 2016
India's trade deficit with China rose to $52.69 billion in 2015-16, from $48.48 billion in the year before, Parliament was informed on Monday.

Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Lok Sabha in a written reply that during the April-September period of the current fiscal, the deficit stood at $25.22 billion.

"Increasing trade deficit with China can be attributed primarily to the fact that Chinese exports to India rely strongly on manufactured items to meet the demand of fast expanding sectors like telecom and power," she said.

She also said that as India and China are both members of the World Trade Organisation, any trade restrictions imposed requires to be WTO compliant.

No blanket ban can be imposed on China, or any other member country, under the WTO framework, she said.

In a separate reply, the minister said that the government has not yet decided on granting relaxation of sourcing condition in the single brand retail sector to three companies.

"Only 3 companies have sought relaxation of sourcing condition. No decision has been taken by the government in this regard," Sitharaman said, without disclosing the names of the companies concerned.

Under Indian foreign direct investment (FDI) norms, proposals involving foreign investment beyond 51 per cent are required to source 30 per cent of the value of goods purchased from within India.

Indians sure know how to stage a successful boycott.

The Indian merchants just take off the "Made in China" sticker, and put on a "Made in India" sticker.

Indian companies like Micromax have already been doing this for years.

It is possible that India becomes Xiaomi's largest revenue source from smart phones in the future.

At home, they better concentrate on smart home appliances. They should be China's Panasonic.

I think their value added would be very low. By the way, welcome back! 很就不见。

Quite likely.

Xiaomi has become so diverse in its product portfolio in China that it is hard to call it a smartphone or even a tech company anymore.

Really great. When I was browsing for 11 11, I realised how much there is need for a all round premium electronics company from Mainland.

That was exactly the point I was making
They have themselves to blame

Just busy. Business and career first and foremost.
In addition, the forum has not been living up to what I anticipated when it has been inundated with the fakers and braggers I am a bit glad that some of the prominent and vicious low-lives have gone forever

Agree to import =/= consumers agree to buy

Moreover, even it is imported, it is more likely to be used to make processed food.
Cheap ingredients are always welcome.

Yes or no
If the importers have placed an order for the indian rice, at least a trading transaction has started and there will be exchanged of goods for money (vice versa) or if they (importers) are entering into a careful contract with no commitment for payment until retail sales are actuated. I wonder if anyone knows what that type of deals are called. But the price of rice could be higher

However, on that part of what you said may be right if the rice could not stand the tests in the market, that is the consumers are staying away from buying, There is no motive for import into China. Then the indian rice loses its market in China unless actions to be taken by the exporter to salvage the situation
