India, US to hold key commercial dialogue next month | Zee News

Last Updated: Wednesday, August 12, 2015 - 15:55

New Delhi: India and the US will hold first-ever high-level strategic and commercial dialogue next month in Washington focusing on areas such as ease of doing business and smart cities with an aim to boost investment and raise bilateral trade five-fold to USD 500 billion annually.

"The Strategic and Commercial Dialogue (S&CD) will be held in Washington DC in 6-7 weeks," US Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Stefan M Selig told reporters here.

He is in town to meet with Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia for the preparatory talks.

Selig said these dialogues will revolve around four areas -- ease of doing business; innovation and entrepreneurship; smart cities with a specific focus on renewable energy, and harmonisation of standards to increase trade.

"The S&CD will be the signature, annual dialogue between our two governments. It will serve as a high-level meeting between our senior government and Cabinet officials as well as an ongoing, sustainable forum for policy discussions," he added.

Selig said all these steps are meant to strengthen the economic and commercial ties between the two countries and create a stronger partnership.

This commercial track would be a platform for both short-term and long-term deliverables, he said, adding that S&CD would focus on not only securing near-term trade and investment outcome, but areas of long-term collaboration.

"We see that the S&CD also serves as a road map, one that will display the next steps to define our partnership in the medium and long term.

"These steps can also be seen as four ambitious and important goals. The first goal is perhaps the most ambitious: to increase bilateral trade five-fold from USD 100 billion today to USD 500 billion annually," he added.

On Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), he said compulsory licensing and IPR concerns are "obviously something that our two governments continue to talk about at all levels. We will continue to do so".

American companies, particularly from the pharmaceutical sector, have time and again alleged that Indian IPR structure discriminates them. They had also raised concerns over issuance of a compulsory licence by India.

Indo-US relations have reached new level with Modi's US visit: Richard Verma | Zee News
Last Updated: Wednesday, September 2, 2015 - 19:02

Guwahati: Indo-US relations have reached a new level with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the USA, America's Ambassador to India Richard Verma said on Wednesday.

"The Indo-US relations have reached a new level with Prime Minister Modi going to the US. It (his visit) jump-started a lot of initiatives," Verma told reporters at a press meet here.

"We have a very good partner in this Prime Minister. He (Modi) says he wants to have very good relations with USA. We have a very good partnership and it is going in the right direction," he said.

30 projects were taken up during Modi's visit, Verma said, adding, "we have to keep the momentum going on all fronts."

"I am excited about where we are going...New ideas and initiatives for trade, students, faculty, health, security area. Investments for students tripled," he said.

"Trade and economy are the corner stones of our relations. Last year there was 28 billion Dollars US investments in India with the setting up of 500 companies employing thousands of Indians," the US ambassador said.

"Likewise, 200 Indian companies came to USA employing several thousand Americans," Verma pointed out.

Though Indo-US trade grew from 100 billion Dollars to 500 billion Dollars, he said it translated to only two per cent exports to each other.

Verma said he was optimistic about enhancing the trade ties and added that bilateral investment treaties have to be signed to enhance investor confidence and bring in more opportunities by linking Indian companies with US firms.

For India to attract investments, he said, the tax and legal regime have also to be in place with easy business modules.

India do not need this kind of statements.

India needs support to initiate UNSC reforms and membership in other clubs like MTCR, NSG. These statements only prove that conflict in Asia is in US's interest.
