India will surpass China as the world's most populous nation by 2025, while Chinas population will peak one year later and then start shrinking because of declining fertility, according to United States Census Bureau projections released Tuesday.
According to the bureau, India will have 1.396 billion people in 2025, up from about 1.09 billion in 2005. The number of people in China will peak at about 1.395 billion in 2026, from 1.3 billion in 2006.
Changing fertility rates are driving the shift, the bureau said. With the fertility rate declining to fewer than 1.6 births per woman in this decade from 2.2 in 1990, China's overall population growth rate has slowed to 0.5 percent annually. In contrast, India's 1.4 percent growth rate is being driven by a fertility rate of 2.7 births per woman.
Birth rates are affecting the number of people entering the labor force, according to the US bureau, with the number of Chinese aged 20 to 24 expected to peak at 124 million in 2010. In India, the number of new entrants to the labor force will reach 116 million in 2024 before decreasing.
China's labor force may keep growing for several years since the population of those in their prime working age, from 20 to 59 years old, will peak in 2016 at 831 million, the bureau said.
Currently, the most populous countries are, in order: China, India, the US, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Russia and Japan, with China and India combined accounting for 37 percent of the world's population with 6.8 billion.
