India's global IT leader image should be reflected in defense domain
New Delhi, May 27, IRNA -- India's image as a global leader in IT should be reflected in the national defense domain, said A K Antony.
"The IT industry therefore, should come up with indigenous products for the transformation of defense" Antony, India's defense minister, said while speaking at Defcom India 2009, organized on Wednesday in New Delhi.
Reiterating that the focus of defense should not be solely on imports, Antony, called for integrating the public and private sector for bringing in a positive shift in defence production.
He said that the defense industry should move from 'Buy' to 'Make' strategy and foreign collaborators can offer expertise to the national manufacturers.
Government would lay more emphasis in categorizing projects in 'Make' category.
Antony further stated that transformation of defense services is a continuing process, and the forces of change need to act immediately to the new challenges. In the context of present military scenario, transformation requires developing parallel capacities; evolution of new products; audit and analysis of systems; capability achievement by developing new hardware and software for the sector.
Defcom India 2009, a two-day seminar, organized by the Integrated Head Quarters of MoD (Army), Corps of Signals and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
The seminar themed on 'Informatics for Defense Transformation and Technology Development in the Information Age' saw participation of over 400 delegates and 100 plus companies.
Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor was also present at the inaugural session.
