Indian state bans beef, introduces jail time for possession

Yes. Non hindus are not allowed to eat beef.

Alcohol is not holy in Islam. But cow is holy in Hinduism. So cow slaughter must be banned.

So you saying that India is only for Hindus?

If cows are not holy to non-hindus, which there are plenty in India, then why the heck are they being denied a source of cheap protein, as many news articles suggest?

At least allow some sort of legal, licensed sales, like only in Muslim areas. What is next? You are going to make India a complete Vegan nation?

So which means, India will have all the laws derived form Hinudism embedded in the constitution.

As Donatello wrote earlier, India is a "Paper Secular Republic".

There is nothing secular in India at all, especially after the take over of govt. by fanatic hindus.

The law is framed for the protection of cattle even if the reason is not necessarily that alone. It also is a state subject & has nothing to do with the central government. Different states have different laws. A Ban on cow slaughter is explicitly allowed under the Indian constitution.

As for the argument of it being against secularism, I would agree if you accept that French style secularism is the basis where religious consideration has no part to play.

If the argument is that regardless of the cow being considered a holy animal by Hindus, that Muslims must be allowed to slaughter & consume its meat regardless of the offense it might cause Hindus, that does follow the French idea of secularism. The counter point to that is non Muslims must then be allowed to draw cartoons & make fun of Islamic figures since the restrictions against such an act can only apply to Muslims & not to people who are non-adherents of that faith. I have seen very few Muslims agreeing to that interpretation. To argue that it is one's right to cause offense but not be a recipient of similar offense is more than a bit hypocritical.

I disagree, as far as I'm concerned all non-Muslims living in Muslim countries should be able to eat pork.

The beef - pork comparison is not very accurate. Muslims do not consider the pig holy.

Welcome back to the dark ages!

Meanwhile thousands live in subhuman conditions in MH and the local government has nothing else to do?

Height of stupidity.

If you didn't create these issue then people question you what you did in the name of development.

so you are proud of india's new title from last year - "suicide capital of the world" ??

One suicide every 40 seconds: WHO report - CNN.com
The most suicide-prone countries were Guyana (44.2 per 100,000), followed by North Korea (38.5), South Korea (28.9), Sri Lanka (28.8), Lithuania (28.2), Suriname (27.8), Mozambique (27.4), Nepal and Tanzania (24.9 each) and Burundi (23.1).

The report found suicide rates were highest globally among those aged 70 years and over, but highest among the young in some countries -- and was the second leading cause of death for 15-29 year-olds globally.

Among the challenges in tackling suicide were intense media coverage when celebrities kill themselves, as witnessed in the recent death of U.S. comedian Robin Williams, which could glamorize the act and fuel suicide "contagion," the report stated.

He he he he he. I said your religious verses are holy and burning them is not allowed. Similarly cow is holy to us and killing it is not allowed. Are you saying that world is only for muslims and Islamic laws must be followed every where?

So ?

About 2 million head of cattle are smuggled into Bangladesh annually from India. The $600 million-a-year trade has flourished over the past four decades and is considered legal by Dhaka.

So far this year, BSF soldiers have seized 90,000 cattle and caught 400 Indian and Bangladeshi smugglers.

Bangladeshi traders who operate auctions to facilitate the sale of cattle to slaughter houses, beef processing units, tanneries and bone crushing factories estimate the industry contributed 3 percent to the country`s $190 billion economy.

India is home to 300 million cattle and is the world`s largest beef exporter and fifth-biggest consumer.

Was that your argument on the French cartoons on the prophet? Surely the prophet is revered by people following Islam, why should others not be allowed to draw cartoons?

Pakistan is an 'Islamic Republic'
India is not.
India claims to be a secular republic, where state has no say in your religious matters...or whatever bullshyt then they taught you in school.

That does not mater. 90% will be ok. we will kill them and dump them in mass graves.

I guess that is Stage 2 of the BJP agenda?

France is not an Islamic republic but I didn't see you using that argument to defend the rights of the cartoonists.

India does not follow the French method. Here offensive literature against Islam (or any other religion) will usually face a ban. That would be consistent with a similar position on beef. The French would allow both.
