Indian slums and Commonwealth Games

China started to reform in the early eitghties and recorder consicutive double digit growth for over two decades and it continues to grow.

Its started in the year of 1978.Its almost 30 yrs and India has been i this path for just ovber a decade, cupled with the fact the decision making has been pretty slow.

Despite a growing middle class Indian poor are in a desperate state, thousands of farmers commit sueside every month coz they can't pay back small loans, as small as $300 and the contrast between the rich and the poor will continue to grow.
India, after China is the second fastest growing economy is the world and progress can be seen throughout the country.
But we need to stay focussed, take one step at a time.
Chinese economy and wealth is three times the size of India yet we never see China promote itself as super power.
India should learn from Beijing.

You never mentioned abt pakistan over here, have u changed ur nationality.:flag:

thousands of farmers every month??? A hundred dead in a month is BIG news,a thousand a month will be catastrophic.

Mumbai (AsiaNews/ICNS) – Despite government promises of aid, there is no let up in the number of debt-ridden farmers who commit suicide in Maharashtra, India’s richest state. From June to date, 962 farmers decided to take their own lives in Vidarbha region alone. This was denounced by Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti, a non-governmental organization that has worked in the area for years.

The latest financial aid package was approved by the government on 29 September: it has been earmarked to “improve the situation of farmers in the poorest districts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra”.

The government said the funding was intended for “loan rescheduling, interest waivers, watershed development, and basic food packages.”

According to government statistics, nearly 4,000 growers committed suicide in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala in the last five years. But independent estimates put the toll much higher, as much as 18,000 The act of ultimate despair is always motivated by the victims’ inability to provide the basic necessities for themselves and their families.

In July, the government promised to allocate 400 million dollars to be distributed as one-off loans, as well as reduction of interest and restructuring of debts, plus a one-year moratorium on loan repayments from farmers. Prime Minister of the Union, Manmohan Singh, said “the economic reforms package to stop suicides will take two or three months to show results”.

To date, however, the situation does not seem to have changed.

here is a news from an independent source of information. this is clearly written here that total number of farmers suicided in last five years in all the affected states of India is in between 4000 to 18000 in last five years. means around 800 to 3,400 per year in last five years out of total 1,150million population of india. means around 2 to 9 farmers commit suicide every day in India out of 1150 million population.

we can also see how much money (around US$400million) "poor" indian government distribute in them to share their pain every year. this is to note that this money is exclusive of that loan which indian goverment give them on the lowest interest rates. i would welcome information about total money pakistani government allocates for her poor farmers every year.

SYDNEY: One Australian farmer commits suicide every four days, defeated by the country's worst drought in 100 years which has left them with dust-bowl paddocks and a mountain of debt, says a national mental health body.

As drought rolls into a sixth year, stoic farmers are reduced to tears under the stress of trying to produce a crop and hold on to land sometimes farmed by the same family for generations.

"One male farmer every four days is committing suicide," Jeff Kennett, chairman of beyondblue, said.

"My fear is that when under prolonged stress and when they see their assets totally denuded of value, that we will see an increase (in suicides)," Kennett told local radio.

The rate among male farmers and farm workers is more than twice the national average, the NSW Farmers Association says.

The figure is all the more worrying because only about 10 per cent of Australia's 20 million population live in rural areas and the number has been declining for years as the rural economy struggles. The vast majority of Australians live in cities.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics suicide report says 2,098 Australians took their lives in 2004.

Crop losses stretch across the country, 92 per cent of economically dominant New South Wales state is in drought, and farmers have started off-loading stock before the hot, dry summer when they would be forced to buy feed and water.

With an El Nino weather pattern, which will bring more dry weather and soaring temperatures, now on the horizon and little prospect of rain until early in 2007, rural hope is evaporating like water in Australia's mud-cracked dams and rivers.

Farmers' wives calling talk-back radio in the city describe their husbands' depression at trudging out into their dry paddocks, day after day, knowing they are losing money.

Prime Minister John Howard has announced a A$350 million ($NZ401.4 million, US$1 = 1.35A$) aid package, but Kennett says farmers also need help coping with the depression and stress of years of drought.

A team of 60 psychologists should be sent out for the next six months "to help address the anxiety, stress, depression being faced by many farmers", particularly men, said Kennett.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAustralia's farmers are typically tough, resilient and resourceful – qualities that have enabled generations of country families to tough it out in hard times of drought and bushfires.

But these same qualities also prevent many from seeking help, particularly for depression, because they are worried that asking for help could be seen as weak or shameful.

Rural counsellor Liz Tomlinson-Reynolds said she receives up to 12 calls a day from depressed farmers.

"They're actually breaking into tears and you know, obviously, terribly, terribly distressed and that's over the phone. The ones that I see personally are no more stoic," Tomlinson-Reynolds told radio from northwest New South Wales.

More than 300,000 rural Australians experience depression each year, says beyondblue, but only a small number seek help.

A beyondblue study found several factors contributed to rural stress, such as isolation, drought-induced financial difficulties, stock loss, pressure of decision-making and the constant mental and physical demands of farming.

But rural communities are the least well-equipped to deal with mental health problems, with limited access to counselling, said the New South Wales Farmers Association.

"There are other facets of severe drought that are unable to be measured in production or dollar terms," the association said in a discussion paper on the drought released on Thursday.

"These are the social ramifications testing not only the farmers but all people on the frontline of drought," it said.

"Depression, isolation, alcohol abuse, family breakdown and suicide rates in regional and farming communities are all exacerbated in time of drought."

this is important to say that 62% of total population of india, around 700million people live in rural areas and total "official" data in around 2.2 suicide per day (as 800 per year) in india. and the above news also says the "official" data which is around 0.25 farmers suicide every day in australia out of around 2 million people living in rural areas of australia. total suicide in 2004 was around 2098 a year or around 6 per day out of 20 million population of australia.

note: Australia was ranked seventh with an HDI of 0.922. only country from asia pacific among top ten.

The UNDP considers that three factors lead to positive human development (HDI). These are a long life, good education and a reasonable income.

It wouldn't be fare to compare India to Australia due huge difference in social sturcture of the society.
Indian farmers are like 'single act poney', unskilled or unfit to perform other jobs than farming.
India doesn't have a social security system like Australia or many western countries have.
This puts Indian farmers in a very delicate and desperate position where as Australians farmers always have the opportunity to apply to alternative jobs.

.
about india, total population of india at the time of freedom was around 290million (with 2% rich and 98% poors with no middle class). and now total number of middle class of india is around 300million with average salary of around $10,000 on PPP which is similar to country like malaysia.

India's GDP at PPP base is scaled to be worth $3.800 billion. If 300 million middle class is generating $10.000 or $3.000 billion p/a, it leaves 800 miilion with $800 billion wich is very close to absolute poverty!
So the middle class or 30% of India population may be compared to Malaysia but what about the rest?
Compare it to Ethiopia or Mozambique??

agreed. im here for a long and I know the social security for a common man is such that every unemployed person get about $405 ever fortnight + 70% of what they pay for renting. free medicare for all. few wrong people are found everywhere in the world but laws here make no difference between races and religions. i even know many people who have 4-5 kids and get that much money from government that they may maintain a house and 2-3 good cars. if you wanna marry, go back india and marry and your wife will also get somethin from government untill she doesn't get settled. and if u dont want to get married, just maintain fitness and go to a pub. every thing is available here. but still people get so much depressed here that suicide rate is much higher than india.

also i have a very good idea of rural areas of india. there, people get free medication if you may afford to stand 3-4 hours on the line of a government hospital. even if you work just two days a week, you may get at least 60+60=120rupees + 10 to 12 kg rice from the land you worked. which is enough for atleast 7 days to feed 2 parents and 3 kids. people grow vegetables on their own land they living. can watch movie for just 2 rupees on local, villege based, TV + DVD theatre. and infact they pay for just some vegetable oils, spices, cloths and little bit for entertainment and rest rice and vegetables they get for free even if they work for just 2 days a week. playing cards for whole day.

what i mean, if living standard of australian is pretty good then also those who are living in rural areas of india are also living their life in the way they want. the only thing is, those who get depressed commit suicide and those who wanna enjoy their life, they enjoying in rural areas of India also. my one aussie firend said, his one friend committed suicide becoz his girl friend said he is no good on bed while he used to love her. and i know one more suicide case when a girl committed suicide becoz her boy friend had a kid from some other girl. few suicide cases were found here because few students failed in high school exams.

can we say these suicide case are really related to economic standard of people of different countries? or they commit suicide when they fail to get what they want in life? i was very close to society of India and here im very much involved with australian also. i find the only similarity between suicide cases of india and australia is the depression. any comment?

first of all, out of total population of 1.1bn, after 300 million, rest 800 have average salary or around $1,000. and im agree this is very less. but what’s the solution? if Mukesh Ambani has US$16bn, then this money is not in his pocket. this is the money which he has in terms of industries where he is employing 100,000s people. if a man work for six days, 8-9 hours a day, and earn money and come under middle class, indian government cant just take his money and give it to those who are uneducated and have no money. whatever is possible, loans with lowest interest rates and distribution of this $400Mn among farmers every year, government is already doing. what else we may expect from the government? if indian government doesn’t have money like United States and oil like gulf countries, what is the solution?

also you are close to journalism and have been writing economic related editorials on this forum. we know total GDP of pakistan on PPP is around $384bn and I remember total number of middle class of pakistan is around 30 million with average salary of around $10,000 on PPP. this way rest 140 million people of pakistan have average salary of around $600 a year. please tell us what pakistani government is doing to improve living standards of those 82% of population of Pakistan. may be indian government may learn something from pakistan.

I agree its 1000 in a year ,not a month.

"or the past 23 years India's GDP has grown at an average annual rate of 6%, making it one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. The growth rate may have been lower than that of China's, but it is double that achieved by the West during the Industrial Revolution. As a result, India's middle class has more than tripled in size to 250 million people. While the number of rich has certainly grown, about 1% of the poor have crossed the poverty line each year"- Time magazine
