The Indian Navy (IN) continues to be beset by accidents involving its frontline warships.

In the service's seventh accident since the start of December, INS Airavat , its newest 6000-tonne landing ship tank (LST), ran aground and severely damaged its propellers on 30 January while returning home to Visakhapatnam harbour.

IN officials told IHS Jane's on 3 February that a board of inquiry is being instituted to determine whether the incident was due to human error or problems posed by the ongoing dredging of the harbour.

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata and commissioned in May 2009, the 125 m-long Airavat is the IN's third Shardul-class LST.

The accident follows others involving three guided-missile frigates, a minesweeper, a corvette, and a Kilo-class diesel-electric submarine. Official inquiries have been ordered into all these mishaps, which the IN has described as "minor" although it has relieved the captains of two of the frigates of their commands.

Meanwhile, the IN's current difficulties were further aggravated in late January after the Ministry of Defence (MoD) ordered an inquiry into an alleged leak of sensitive documents by a senior officer from the Directorate of Naval Operations.

Captain Manoj Rawat, who faces dismissal for his involvement in an extramarital affair, is alleged to have passed on secret documents to his now ex-lover. In a complaint to IN headquarters at his refusal to marry her, the woman reportedly included copies of several official documents that she claimed to have received from Capt Rawat during their affair.

Senior IN officials, however, believe these documents are research papers collated from open sources.

The MoD is concerned over the matter following a 2006 security breach in the Directorate of Naval Operations, in which sensitive documents relating to equipment purchases were allegedly passed on to arms dealers.

Several IN officers were dismissed, but the case has not been finalised as it awaits the extradition of one of the principals from the UK.

like B0ts... :omghaha:

topic...

Corvette INS Kamorta ran aground due to mechanical failure.its Radar got jammed during trial.but it didn't even took any "proper" damage, cause as per reports,it continued its trial.this was posted only yesterday..

INS Airavat is a LST.its got slightly aground due to narrow channel.

every friking Naval Assets around the globe gets damaged in this kind of accident.its due to "Indian Media's" transparancy that even minor accidents get highlighted.I appreciate this, though noob reporters always "Hype" the news.

everyone knows that any Naval Asset, after operational deployment, needed some time to the dock for repair.cause its always some crack,or dented proppellor,or other problems that forced them to repair.

ha ha ha:rofl::lol:!never expected to hear this from any chinese member as we all know the reality of chinese military training:omghaha:,remember the submarine-361 accident:sarcastic:...

The key word is 7 accident in 2 months. While accident do happen in every navy, even USN submarine run aground. But do USN , Russian Navy and PLAN have accident have 7 accident in 2 months? Worst of all the accident happen in your own navy base and outside channel of your own wharve. That is totally ridiculous and my stance of lousy training of Indian navy still stand. I think somalia pirates are even more discipline and better trained than Indian navy personnel.

actually, they do more than that..but they choose to remain silent..

eg....USN in last 2-3 months..

just few.....

one link just to show how naive you're about accidents..

only in the last decade, there are over 22 major Submarine Accidents.majority are US Subs.

22 submarines in accidents during past decade - Telegraph

India categorizes clash with "Fishing boat" as accident.do you know whats accident and yet USN denied to release info about it???

Japanese Tanker Goes Godzilla On US Destroyer

I wonder how many you'd know..only in 2013,there is about 50 or more major accidents got reported on USN(a simple Google search will provide you the info).surely that'd make USN sailors worst of Somalian Pirates.

I know you guys are kind of "B0t",but sometimes, remaining silent is proof of intelligence.
