Indian Navy keeps eye on Iranian ship anchored off Kerala coast

The Indian Navy is keeping a close eye on Iranian merchant vessel MV Assa, anchored for over a month off the coast of Kerala.

A strict watch is being kept on MV Assa, which is lying in the Indian exclusive economic zone, government sources said in New Delhi.

The defence and the external affairs ministries were informed about the presence of the ship soon after it was observed there, they said. The type of cargo being carried by the ship is also not known.

India's EEZ extends till 200 nautical miles where it has exclusive right to resources but cannot interfere with commercial ships passing through from this zone. They said the ship has been lying between Kochi and Lakshadweep Islands for around a month and may have developed some snag in its engine.

Sources said as per international practices, navy can question the merchant vessels passing through country's EEZ but this ship has not been questioned so far.

An Iranian vessel named MV Assa is also in the sanctions list of the United States and the United Kingdom but it is not clear whether it is the same vessel.

what ? even after a month we got no idea of what's inside the cargo ? any specific reasons ? or0the govt of India is allowing them to dump nuclear waste in Indian ocean? we are really careless when issues come like this, just months back two huge merchant ships drifted and got stuck near Mumbai's shores (even after repeated warnings) there was huge oil spillage near coast. is none accountable for such carelessness ??? heights!

there are rules which have been explained in the article . we cannot cross them . they are in international waters.

this is strange really
that Iran has not approached India on this matter.
whatever the issue that is keeping that ship from moving on needs to be made public.

if the Ship was near the shores of Arabian countries or where the US ships roam then this ship might have been boarded? confiscated or even sunk.

I dont think India and Iran have bad relations that Iran would be sypig on India from there?
If Indian Navy approaches the ship and does a search and Iranian protest then they should be asked what they are doing if there is no problem and if there is any problem why didnt they ask for help or took indians into confidence?

If its international water what the hell does it have to do with them?
first they dont pay for oil now this....

i prefer it if India became our friend rather than this BS.

it is present in india's EEZ......also problems in payment of oil are not our fault, blame US for that.....i also want india and Iran to remain friends......
