Indian Coast Guard ship decommissioned after 23 years of services
MUMBAI: On January 10 in a traditional military ceremony held at Naval Dockyard Mumbai, the Indian Coast Guard Ship Annie Besant was decommissioned with full armed forces honours. The ceremony was presided over by Inspector General SPS Basra, YSM, PTM, TM Commander Coast Guard Region West.
The ship has been flying the National Flag and Coast Guard Ensign during her illustrious carrier spanning over 23 years of commission. ICGS Annie Besant was third of its series, known as Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) built by Goa Shipyard Ltd at Goa. The occasion was graced by various civil and military dignitaries besides previous crew of the vessel.
ICGS Annie Besant was named after a great leader of India's independence movement namely, Mrs. Annie Besant, who was one of those foreign leaders who inspired the love for the country among the Indians and later went to become president of Indian National Congress. The Ship was commissioned in the Indian Coast Guard on December 07, 1991 by the then Hon'ble Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri S Krishna Kumar.
During the ceremony, an impressive Guard of Honour was paraded and with sunset the Coast Guard Ensign was hauled down for the last time. Soon after 'Decommissioning Pennant' which is equal to the length of the ship was lowered. The previous Commanding Officers along with number of officers and sailors who had served on board were present at the venue to bid adieu to the ship. The Commanding Officer of the ship Commandant Rajesh Mittal made final decommissioning report to the Commander Coast Guard Region West.
The Commander Coast Guard Region (West), while addressing the crew and esteemed guests present in the ceremony, highlighted the contributions made by this vessel in ensuring maritime and coastal security on the West Coast of India, especially along Karnataka coast.
