Indian Muslims endorse anti-terrorism edict

HYDERABAD: Thousands of Indian Muslims have united to endorse a religious edict condemning terrorism as un-Islamic, a scholar said Monday.

The two-day weekend meeting in the southern city of Hyderabad drew around 6,000 Muslim clerics and scholars, and came after India was hit by a wave of bombings by suspected militants across the Hindu-majority nation.

Indian Muslim leaders have since complained that members of their community were being subjected to harassment by police. The endorsed fatwa, or ruling, holds that the term jihad cannot be applied to terrorist acts.

"Jihad is basically a constructive phenomenon. Terrorism is based on destruction alone. Jihad is permitted only for restoring peace and is a fundamental right of a human being," the edict reads.

These guys are 100% right. An ideology twisted by a few to suit their purposes does not reflect the views of a whole community. Terrorism affects everyone negatively.

Religious clerics can do a lot to curb religious terrorism in india. Its their duty, as religious leaders, to convince the followers of the religion to respect other religions, and most importantly, that we are all the children of the great nation of india and as such we all have the duty to serve and protect the motherland.

We are all Indians. We are all in this together. This should not be a war between Hindus and Islamic extremists, or Muslims and christians against hindu extremism, but rather a war where India as a whole stand up to extremism of all forms and defeat it as a nation.
