Indian Minority Affairs Minister resigns

Updated at: 1148 PST, Friday, December 19, 2008
Indian Minority Affairs Minister resigns NEW DELHI: Indian Union Minority Affairs Minister A R Antulay, who is at the centre of a storm triggered by his remarks on the circumstances surrounding Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare's killing, has sent his resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, highly placed sources said on Friday.

79-year-old Antulay, whose remarks created an uproar in Parliament and outside with the opposition parties demanding his removal, had sent his resignation on Wednesday night, they said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Antulay set off a major political row by demanding a probe into the shooting of Karkare in the 26/11 terror strikes which he linked to investigations into the alleged involvement of Hindu radicals in the Malegaon blast case.

BJP and Shiv Sena seek Antulay’s scalp
NEW DELHI: India’s BJP and Hindu nationalist Shiv Sena pressed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday and Thursday that Minority Affairs Minister AR Antulay be sacked for suggesting the killing of Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare in the Mumbai terrorist attacks was a conspiracy. Shiv Sena leader Anant Geete, who had raked up Antulay’s remarks in the House the previous day, said the Indian premier should come to House to explain his minister. “We want his resignation,” added BJP’s Adityanath Yogi, going on to make an abusive remark against Antulay, which the speaker expunged. iftikhar gilani

Good riddance, if true.

Antulay unfazed, says only helped government
NEW DELHI: Indian Minority Affairs Minister AR Antulay was unfazed by the uproar after he suggested the killing of an Indian anti-terror police chief during the Mumbai terror attacks was a conspiracy. “I owe explanation to none. I have not said anything which has embarrassed the government and the Congress party. In fact, I have helped the government,” he said. In a brief letter to the Indian premier on Thursday, he said he was “not questioning that a terrorist was involved in the killing of Hemant Karkare”. iftikhar gilani/app/ daily times monitor

Indeed, good riddance. Ministers should be more responsible in their speech. We've already had the Maharashtra CM, VCM, Kerala CM, Home Minister and now Minorities Affairs Minister resign over this episode.
