Man gets 10-yr jail for rape

KENDRAPADA: A court on Thursday sentenced a 35-year-old man to 10 years imprisonment for raping a girl four years ago.

Jajpur district and sessions judge held Prafulla Bindhani, a mason, guilty. Besides serving the jail term, he will also have to pay a fine of Rs 20,000.

The incident took place at Lemba village under Sukinda police limits on April 2, 2010. Bindhani of Santarapur, raped the 19-year-old girl at her house, when her parents were absent.

After the survivor's father lodged an FIR, a medical examination was conducted, which confirmed rape.

Family members of the survivor said they were satisfied with the quantum of punishment. "Number of rape incidents has gone up drastically in the recent past. The verdict will send a strong message to the criminals," said Naliniprava Tarei, president of of All India Democratic Women's Association, district unit.

Because the the victim is a minor, the police only need to prove the sexual act.
