Indian scientists have hit a wall as they try to ship a scientific instrument to China for use on the country’s Tiangong space station. A team from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bangalore applied for an export permit from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs for the Spectroscopic Investigations of Nebular Gas (Sing) device about a year ago. However, the team has not heard of any progress since. “We completed everything two months ago. The instrument is now sitting in the clean room, ready to fly,” said project leader and astrophysicist Jayant Murthy. “I’ve been told that our application is being processed, and that it has not been approved yet,” he said, adding that Sing was supposed to arrive in China last year to be launched in mid-2023, but had been delayed due to Covid.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not responded to a request for comment. Sing was jointly selected by the China Manned Space Agency and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs to be one of nine international experiments carried out on board Tiangong.

As the first collaboration between India and China in space science, the US$50,000 instrument will be mounted on Tiangong to scan the sky in the ultraviolet waveband as it orbits the Earth, and help understand the composition and behaviour of interstellar gas, the birth and death of stars, and other scientific questions.

Even though most of Sing’s components – including a telescope and a spectrograph – were developed by Murthy and his graduate students, things usually became sensitive when it came to space, and the tense relationship between India and China did not help, he said. “I’ve tried to explain that our instrument would be pointing up towards the sky, and not looking down at the Earth at all, but that apparently did not work,” he said. Other international experiments selected to fly on Tiangong, including ones being developed in Europe, were also facing export clearance problems, he said without giving more details.

If Sing can make its way to China this year, it is still likely be the first international payload to operate on the Chinese space station.

Murthy said the opportunity was very important, partly because his students had invested so much time in the project, and partly because the launch cost would be covered by the China Manned Space Agency – which would otherwise be well beyond his budget limit. The designed lifespan of Sing is between six months and a year. “Our data will be completely open, and we have no restrictions on anyone using it,” Murthy said.

“But for now, there’s not much we can do. We are still hopeful, though we understand the challenges".

I hope CNSA will ban any scientific cooperation of experiments between India and China onboard Chinese manned space station since it's the only logical conclusion. India considers China a strategic enemy and has been acting against many Chinese interests in the world. Not let Indians take advantages of Chinese space program.

Looks like multiple organizations share the same concerns about China.

China should invite friendly countries to participate in order to show India and Europe their place. Pakistan and North Korea can pitch in, they have excellent space programs which are recognized all over the world.

GoI’s worry is justified. Why don’t we test it elsewhere? BTW, India will take lead in most fields in a decade if the current momentum continues.

YAWN.
I had been hearing this since 50 years ago.
Can Indians leave the " will take lead in a decade " out of everything they do.
Just do it and recognition will come, no need for all this BOASTING until Indians are world renowned for BOASTING.

SUPA POWA 2012 and we are still waiting in 2023.

Knowing the CCP habitual thieves that simply take over any designs and inventions why send anything to them ?
What inventions India got for others to copy?
Like how India invented the Internet 5000 years ago?

How India copied MATH from the Chinese.

"
A Singapore researcher has crushed the long-held belief that the Arabs and Indians invented the numeral system used today, according to a report carried by the Straits Times Thursday.

The earliest known text on arithmetic based on the current number system was written by an Arab in AD 825, but the earliest Chinese treatise on the rod numerals and procedures for multiplication and division - the sun zi suanjing - was written about 425 years earlier.

When Dr Lam compared the procedures in both, she found, to her astonishment, that they were identical. 'They could not have developed the same systems by sheer coincidence,' said the mother of three. "

Obviously you need to dig deeper before believing such crap

It is difficult to understand that this equipment is used in the "Spectral Research of Nebula Gas" project. This project was proposed by India to be carried out on Tiangong. China itself does not have this demand, but only opens Tiangong as a platform to carry equipment.

It's called a ballpoint pen, and it's a simple, common commodity.

See the steel ball in the refill of a ballpoint pen? You Indians can't even make this kind of steel ball.

The Indians don't really have some sort of high end technology, they don't even have a lot of low end technology. They can't even make a full ballpoint pen.

The so-called aerospace is also heavily dependent on foreign technology.
