Indian economy not in good shape: Manmohan Singh
PTI | Updated: Jan 31, 2017, 04.37 PM IST

NEW DELHI: A day before presentation of Economic Survey, former Prime MinisterManmohan Singh on Monday painted a bleak picture of the Indian economy insisting "it is not in good shape" while formerFinance Minister P Chidambaram said the government is "hiding behind" GDP numbers that are being challenged.

Releasing the "Real State of Economy 2017", a document prepared by the Congress research cell at the party headquarters here, Singh said it speaks about the state of India's economy, its many issues and where it is heading.

"That the Indian economy is not in a good state is obvious. Even IMF has downgraded our GDP growth and it will not be 7.6 per cent but less than 6.6 per cent," he said.

One of the least enviable jobs in the world at the moment has to be that of Indian finance minister. Arun Jaitley will present his fourth annual budget to India’s Parliament on Wednesday amid terrible headwinds -- mostly caused by his government’s bewildering and disruptive decision to invalidate 86 percent of India’s currency last November. If he’s to revive growth, the first thing he has to do is rethink his priorities.

The scale of the challenge should be clear. The government’s officialestimate of 7.1 percent GDP growth this financial year (which began in April) is widely doubted and doesn’t take into account the chaos wrought by demonetization. The International Monetary Fund predicts growth will come in closer to 6.6 percent, or a full percentage point below earlier estimates. And these numbers conceal even moreweaknesses. Most glaringly, Indian investment has shrunk for the last three quarters for which reliable data is available.

Election time in four prominent states, buddy. For 10 years he ruined India and now he opens his mouth.

OECD, World Bank, IMF and every rating agency has projected a near 7% economic growth forecast, backed up with aggressive de-regulation of strategic industries and incentive programmes to promote growth in the manufacturing industry.

And this man is saying the country is not doing well when entire India is doing great.

Only 0.5% was the impact felt by Indian economy. Sure it made us stand in queues. But it promoted digital transaction, much needed here where public level corruption is very high. Less than 5% Indians pay tax as most of them are small scale business owners. We in service are not stupid to pay taxes alone.

So yes, this is a good move which will benefit the country in the long run.

"MaunMohan"....
Majboori makes a deaf talk.Chinese are beating their drum over this harami talking.....
Everyone knew demonetization will hurt economy. It did hurt domestic production badly.Although having such most Indians has supported this move & it is unexpectedly astonishing. Also people are now concerned about paying tax, black money, fighting against corruption & developments. From tomorrow there will be no cash withdrawal limit or transaction limit.Everything has gone back to normal. So does the economy will within coming one or two quarter.
a document prepared by the Congress research cell
Nuff said..

De-monetization was a perfectly acceptable experiment.

Chinese trolls also have a reputation problem. When has that ever stopped you from yapping your big mouths off?

i wish he had found this "energy" when he was in PM's office.
However, a learned man's opinion matters more than a thousand oppurtunists.

The "learned man" oversaw the biggest plunder of national wealth in India's history including in HIS OWN ministry. He didn't open his mouth condemning it, let alone taking responsibility for his own incompetence and lack of oversight combined with lack of capability to lead.

Now that there are 5 state elections upon us, the "learned man" opens his mouth and predictably reads from a script handed down to him and he is not an opportunist?

Yep, I am. But I have problem when you exclude him from the "thousand opportunists".

He is as much an opportunist as the politician next to him. He was also a coward who just kept his mouth shut when the nation was being plundered right under his nose and right under his supervision and right in his own ministry!

He is an opportunist for opening his mouth now that there are major state elections.

well, i dont go gaga over our current PM for his negligence (read tacit approval) for many things (read inaction when his cabinet is spewing venom) but i dont go about blaming him.
likewise, our former PM ,too was complicit in his actions regarding corruption.
the difference between the two is one is a lackey of family politics and other is of a fundamental organisation under the garb of religious righteousness. one created (or rather ignored) a mass scale organised loot and the other is creating a chasm among the populace to satisfy his populist sugardaddy image.
which is more worse is not the point of discussion.
what is mentionable is that we think alike when it comes to our former PM, whether or not we agree on the current PM is only a matter of speculation.
so lets not point fingers in one direction only.
