RAIPUR, India — Doctors in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh performed hysterectomies on poor village women without a valid medical reason in order to claim money from a national insurance scheme, the state's health minister said on Wednesday.
Under the program launched in 2008, doctors can claim up to 30,000 rupees ($540) to treat poor families, providing a safety net to help pay for expensive hospital surgeries. But critics say the program was exploited by unscrupulous doctors.
"The women were deliberately ill-advised by doctors who removed their uterus to get money," Amar Agrawal, Chhattisgarh's health minister told Reuters.
"As per my information the doctors have so far managed to make roughly 2 crore (10 million) rupees ($360,000) in recent months by removing uteruses without any valid medical reasons."
The state government examined 1,800 hysterectomies performed in the impoverished state as part of an investigation into the alleged scam. Many of the operations were suspected to have been performed illegally, government sources told Reuters.
A woman cannot bear children after the removal of a uterus and the procedure is often accompanied by the removal of ovaries, which some studies have linked to early onset of osteoporosis and other serious side effects.
Raman Kataria, a physician with a non-profit organization in rural Chhattisgarh, said government policy was abused because of the absence of an external governing body and standard treatment guidelines.
"There has to be a regulatory body," he said. "It cannot be left to the devices of these care providers."
Multiple pregnancies, early childbearing, malnutrition and traumatic home deliveries make rural women in India susceptible to multiple problems of the uterus.
A similar scandal was reported in 2010 by media in the state of Andhra Pradesh, where many illiterate village women between 20 and 40 years of age underwent hysterectomies.
A recent Thomson Reuters TrustLaw poll, based on parameters such as quality of health services, education levels and the threat of sexual violence, ranked India as the worst country to be a woman in the G20 group of nations.

The worst and best G20 countries for women

LONDON (TrustLaw) - Strong policies against violence and exploitation combined with good access to education and healthcare make Canada the best G20 country to be a woman, while infanticide, child marriage and slavery make India the worst, a global poll of experts showed on Wednesday.

Germany, Britain, Australia and France rounded out the top five of the 19 richest nations that make up the Group of 20 along with the European Union in a perceptions poll of 370 gender specialists conducted by TrustLaw, a legal news service run by Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The United States came in sixth but polarised opinion due to issues surrounding reproductive rights and affordable healthcare. At the other end of the scale, Saudi Arabia –- where women are well educated but are banned from driving and only won the right to vote in 2011 -– polled second-worst after India, followed by Indonesia, South Africa and Mexico.

Women continue to suffer in a India stated to be next super power by its people but in reality its more than worst..Super power not even in next thousand years.

Another local news made a WORLD AFFAIR. Another India bashing thread. Don't make a fuss when people will post in retaliation.

I hope no Indian members resort to post on acid throwing incidents in Pakistan, support to Taliban who cut noses, shoots women at will, treat them like nothing.

I hope no Indian posts about dead babies roasted and grinded to make capsules in China.

I hope no Indian posts about history where 3 million people where killed and women in thousands had their worst nightmare.

I hope people will behave like adults and stop posting immature, local news on a defense forum just to score some cheap points.

I hope......................

Hope is not dangerous word its like a ray of light at the end of dark tunnel. Now tell me Werent these poor women exploited by the govt employee and well to do doctors. And when i say maoist are fighting for right thing you blast me.who will give justice to these wome????indian courts where person dies of old age rather than getting justice. So where will these poor women go for help.ofcourse not to the zila adikari where files moves at snail's pace.they will go to maoist for justice.

.
This is outrageous behavior from health care workers and physicians! Whatever happened to selfless service and the all important Hippocratic oath? Sometimes I think that Doctors and the services they provide should be held liable under the purview of common consumer act. Sometimes they are given too much leeway for their irresponsibility.

India still needs a watertight regulatory mechanism to see that Govt. health schemes are not abused by health care workers for monetary benefits.

.
India has one of the worst human rights record and violations of any country.
Their abuse of women, their caste system, their religious killings, etc.

Disgusting.
Atleast in my country , such things will be known to public . Feel pity for country where people cant open their mouths .

Hope is for people who expect someone else, to do their job or support those people who actually fight against these evils.

I have asked you and all , just to sit back one day, ponder your thoughts and find a way, how you can take up a challenge and work to act against a evil that's crippling our nation.

These news are published due to reporters who took these subjects rather than becoming page 3 paparazzi.

Why don't people start atleast do something for a single person in our country. Why not donate to organizations who work for these women? Why not give old clothes to homeless who dies in winters? Why not distribute books in a govt. school by collecting money from your neighborhood. Why not stop visiting shops, thadis etc. where children are forced to work?

Its easy to point against the tide but its damn difficult to swim.

Its time you donate 10 rs everyday to any NGO everyday. You can miss a movie, smoke less cigarettes, don't party one weekend, don't have over priced food at a fancy restaurant so that one child can have full day meal in a country where most number of malnourished children resides.

These evils exists not become of evil people, but mute spectators who just ignore it considering its not their problem.

Why not send emails to Human Rights commission and other related govt. agencies to pass strict laws like life imprisonment for endangering the life of a women.

The day when you do so, instead of posting over 3000 posts, I won't question you.

P.S. Don't try to divert the topic by blasting on me.
