Indian students have yet again proved their mettle at the international level with their successful performance at the 44th International Chemistry Olympiad 2012 (IChO2012), held in Washington. Of the team of four, three students have bagged gold medals and one, silver.

Prof Vijay Singh, national coordinator, Science Olympiads, said, “The performance of this chemistry team has been the best in the history of our (India’s) participation in the International Chemistry Olympiad. We have been participating in the Olympiad for 14 years now, since 1999.”

The 44th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO2012) was held at Washington, USA, from July 21 to 30. A total of 283 of the brightest students from 72 countries participated. “Our students were competing with the best students from other countries, and in spite of stiff competition, we did well,” added Singh.

The Olympiad effort is supported by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) of the Government of India.

The four students were selected through a three-tier process. The first tier consisted of a nationwide chemistry exam for which over 33,000 students appeared. The remaining two tiers consisted of a series of difficult selection tests, theoretical and practical.

Shashi Choudhary, the mother of Nimit Kumar Singh, who won the silver medal, was excited about her son’s win. “He has always been sincere in his studies and is to join IIT-Bombay this year to study electrical engineering.”

The team will arrive in Mumbai on Wednesday, following which they will be felicitated at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE).
