Army Technology - Indian Army's Agni II Fails Night Test

The Indian Army's new nuclear-capable Agni II intermediate-range ballistic missile has failed to reach set standards during a scheduled night test.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) admitted that the first ever live test fire had failed and announced that they would be investigating the reason behind the failure.

During the test, the missile, which was fired from a mobile launcher, took off smoothly, with no hitch in the first stage separation but failed to meet the set results mid-way at the second stage separation.

The test, intended to validate procedures for night firing, was conducted by the Indian Army's Strategic Forces Command from Wheeler Island, off the Orissa coast.

Agni-II is a two-stage solid propelled ballistic missile weighing 17t with a length of 20m that can carry a payload of 1t over a distance of 2,000km.

Agni-II is part of the Agni series that includes the already-inducted Agni-I, which has a range of 700km and the Agni-III which has a range of 3,500km and is still in the process of induction.

The missile is being developed by Advanced Systems Laboratory in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Bharat Dynamics, Hyderabad.

Good they tested and even better it failed. I feel we have still not mastered this technology and this is a reminder for us to focus on shortcomings.

How can a 2-stage GPS guided missile fail a night test? Missile operations are generally independent of light or lack of it unless the system is using some land tracking device generally used in old Tomahawk Missiles!!

What about the thousands of milisecond calculation generally performed on Cray's prior to a launch to mimic the entire route, wind weather and other external factors during flight? My guess, your DRDO has a software glitch that lead to false information or maybe some inferior screw within got loose and threw the dud of course?

But day or night, why should it really matter?

Xyon, check the indian missile thread and a thread which is already there on this topic.....gambit posted interesting info there.

I agree to you. Failures lead to perfection. No big deal atleast it will help them to improve.

Did they test their Missiel at noon? and at 2pm and 4pm? If not then dont let it go until you test them at every hour or two hours. You cannot trust DRDO. Can you?

Let me suggest you guys a better motto for DRDO. "Bound to fail, after failures"
