Indian Army to purchase Bell 407 Shen helicopters

Six years after American defence firms forayed into the Indian arms market after the lifting of US embargoes, a company is set to bag the first commercial deal for selling 197 light helicopters to the Army.

After almost two years of evaluation, including trials at the world's highest battlefield on the Siachen glacier, the army has, according to highly placed sources, opted for Bell Helicopter's 407 Shen model in preference to EADS' Eurocopter.

Though the army has given its technical evaluation to the defence ministry, the deal is yet to be cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council headed by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherhee as well as the Cabinet Committee on Security.

Though the price negotiations are yet to be finalised, the deal, which includes the training of Indian pilots, is estimated to be worth over 400 million dollars.

The deal envisages the initial delivery of 60 helicopters in a fly-away condition and co-production of 137 helicopters after 100 per cent technology transfer by state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

And for the first time, the deal will include a 30 per cent offset to be negotiated according to the defence ministry's requirements.

Under the new arms procurement policy, the government has enforced 30 per cent offsets in all contracts worth over Rs 300 crores and made it mandatory for firms selling arms to India to sign an integrity pact.

After the lifting of sanctions, the US made military sales of the ANTPQ fire-finding radars and reached an agreement to sell the retired warship USS TRENTON. All these were government-to-government deals done through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme of the US.

Yeah baby! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!
What did i tell you Adux, it would be Bell.

That makes life hell of a lot sweeter in Siachen. The vintage Cheetah/Chetak's will be retired, these new beauties will take over the job.

It would make logistics a LOT easier plus give MUCH more capable machines than the ones army currently uses, give new technology to the Army. It would help a lot in the upkeep of Siachen.

. .
Oh we will get ATV, but my guess is that it will be operational around 2012.

Anyways, the cost of operating in Siachen will also go down considerably. Bell 407 is an entirely new generation of heli's, much more fuel efficient.

We are ready to haul *** NOW. this should send strong signals about siachin

How would it send a strong message about Siachen? Aside from the fact that you are buying hardware that can be used everywhere else just as Pakistani units are already getting re-equipped with Fennec AS-550s for operations in Siachen, I do not see a "message" anywhere..sorry. It was about time for both countries to retire 30 plus year old Allouettes/cheetaks any ways.

That's news to me Blain.. When did this deal go through? I have great fondness for the Squirrel as it the helo I learned about basic flight in a helicopter.

A while back. We have quite a few in service right now. One correction on the name, I meant Fennec (AS-550) which is essentially the military version of the Squirrel.

Here is one during a demo with the SSG team:

I have seen some pictures and details of Aero India in an Aircraft Magazine here in the UK and there was the picture of the full mock up of the ALH helicopter gunship. IT WAS VERY COOL.

Also regarding the possible aquisition of C130J the magazine featured a rival bid from Russia by Ilyushin.

The Russian bid looked like IL 76 but with only two engines.

It is flying in PAF colors in post #8.
That should be enough evidence. ;)

Let me see if I can pull up the signed contract from my filing cabinet.. :D No I am just kidding ;)

My friend, it was contracted for and purchased and is in active service with the Pakistan Army. It even flew in yesterday's joint services parade.

Blain, excuse my ignorance but what is this bird capeable of? It doesn't look like a battleship nor can I see the armament in the pics. Is it designed to operate on high altitude?

Could you please give more info in its specifics and role?

Thanks!
Neo

Neo is a utility helicopter but is flexible enough to be used in light gunship role (interestingly enough its primary offensive capability is TOW...ring a bell? ;) but can be armed with unguided rockets and a gun pod etc.

The best thing about it is that it is extremely capable in High Altitude flying. If you recall, a slightly modified Fennec/Squirrel set the world record by landing on top of Mount Everest a while back. So for operations in the range of 17000-19000 ft (which is where most of troops are deployed at Siachen), its a very good platform.

I personally think that PA spent a lot of time evaluating the type and then selected it with Siachen specifically in mind. Although this heli is very flexible. I am sure that IA's Bell 407s are equally good...they got the deal with assembly and some other parts manufacturing by HAL which would eliminate the chances of sanctions.

Thanks Blain!

Good, once again I'm impressed by the efficience and expertise of our military think tank.
I don't know how its done but considering our limited resources and budget these guys get the best of the best for our forces!

So in what numbers are we getting these birds, how many are required to have a credible utility/liason/light transport units in Northern Command?
