SRINAGAR, India — An Indian army spokesman says government forces killed three suspected rebels in a 12-hour gunbattle in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.
Lieut. Colonel Nitin Narhar Joshi says the army and police launched a joint operation Monday night based on intelligence that militants were hiding in a forest village in the Handwara region.
Narhar says three rebels were killed early Tuesday, while there were no casualties among the troops.
None of the nearly half-dozen rebel groups in the region have issued any statement about the fighting, which followed hours after militants killed a top counterinsurgency official in an audacious attack Monday.
Kashmir has been in turmoil since rebels launched an armed uprising in 1989, leading to a crackdown by Indian forces. Some 68,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
