Indian Army Pilots Die To Avoid Civilian Casualties

Two Indian Army aviation corps pilots Major Atul Garje, a qualified flying instructor, and Major P Bhanu Chandar died yesterday when the Cheetah/Alouette II helicopter they were flying crashed in Western India. According to prima facie evidence, the helicopter came down following critical rotor failure.

The two officers manoeuvered their chopper away from an area where they could eyeball civilians on the ground, crashing finally into a house whose occupants were away. Nobody was killed or hurt on the ground. Both pilots died in the crash. R.I.P.

The crash once again brings into focus the unconscionable delays in the Indian Army's light helicopter competition, an effort that seeks to replace several vintage Cheetahs and Chetak/Alouette IIIs currently in service, with a European or Russian platform.

.
They were training and was en route to the Indian airshow's venue.
RIP, my thoughts are with your family and friends.

. . . .
even in peril they thought abt the safety of civilians. as far as i know the main rotor developed snag, which is a serious problem in helicopters. even in that problem the pilots took the helicopter away from residential area. this says a lot abt character of pilots.

HATS OFF TO BOTH OF THEM. MAY GOD BLESS THEIR SOUL.

This is very very sad and unfortunate.
we lose our bright pilots every other week, only becoz of machinery malfunction.
this doest seem to happen so often in other countries.
why India ?
is it becoz of corruption ? do they buy crappy spares to fill their pockets ?

what a waste of a soldier's life.

I heard in the news that these helicopters were inducted in 1971... is that true???? And shame on Antony who promised it will be replaced by 2007
