Hi
I found this on an FB page of Indian Aerospace and Defence news. I found it worth reading. Though some errors. But I think it's worth sharing.

Modernization of an Indian Army Infantry Soldier
Review and report on present conditions and future projects and needs.
I have classified the needs and equipment needed for a 21st century infantry solider into two categories.
1.Firearms
2.Uniform and gears.
Firearms
1.Sidearm(9 mm handgun):- Indian Army has been using Soviet era relics like Pistol Auto 9mm 1A which is a good 9mm pistol but weighs more than 1.25 kg and it's accuracy is around 45 m. Army has inducted Glock 17 , but in small numbers. It needs something like FN Herstal or SIG P226 for more reliability and accuracy as well as lethality.
2.Rifles:- I have again classified rifles into two categories, Battlefield rifles and Assault rifles(Close combat). Both of them are needed by an Army.
Assault Rifle:- Indian Army has been using assault rifiles like Ak47 and Tavour in close combat, but the recent Indian Ghatak rifle (Ak47 clone) is good and 100% made in India. The ak47s can be replaced by it, as assault rifles are mostly used in anti terrorist operations, not in a war. Special forces are also being armed with M4 and M16s from USA and Ak74 from Russia.
Battlefield Rifle:-Army is currently using INSAS 1B1 version which is heavily upgraded version of original INSAS and it does not jam anymore.
Also you would like to know about the procurment program for modern rifles, but according to IHS Janes most of the candidates were not able to compete with even INSAS in mountain and desert regions, and the tender will likely be withdrawn. So it is a golden opportunity for us to give a push to our own DRDO MCIWS. It is a multi tasking rifle which can fire a variety of ammo.
3.Submachine guns:-Our armed forces still use world war 2 era sterling's(British relics) as submachine guns, but this is changing as MP5 and UZI have been inducted in small numbers, but the real king will be our own indeginious MSMC. It has already entered prototype production phase.
4.Grenades and other explosives:- India has lagged behind in this field and we still depend upon Russia for grenades. Forget about the gas and frag bursts and other equipment you use in Call of Duty, our men don't have access to Made in India Grenades. But this trend is changing, and DRDO has come up with indigunious versions and Army has placed an initial order for 1.8 Million pieces which will replace our Soviet relics.
Uniform and protection gear.
1.Headgear:- For a long time our men have been serving us with heavy , less effective helmets causing many avoidable deaths. They should now be given lighter all weather level at head gears with proper goggles, a torch, a night vision and a radio communication set. These are very important in modern day operations.
2. Boots:- Our soldiers are rapidly getting new all weather all terrain ultra light boots since 2009. DRDO has come up with a proposal to make it fire resistant too for the use by our special forces.
3.Uniform:- India has signed a deal with USA to develop a modern uniform which will be all weather and also wars of chemical and biological weapons.
4.Bullet Proof vests:- Our men presently use heavy and less effective steel plating vests which should be replaced by kevelar at vests for more protection and less weight.
5.Gloves and Knee pads:- These might not seem to be so important but it improves the mobility and survivability of a soldier. We should arm our men with standard products. The government of India is rapidly providing these. The Army personnel who are deployed in high threat and conflict zones are already eqipped. Now it's time for our reserve men and forces like BSF, ITBP and Assam Rifles.
These equipment are the basic requirements of a modern day Infantry Soldier so that he can survive and win in all conditions. The situation is improving fast and by the end of this decade our armed forces will no longer be inferior by modern standards.
