Indian Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat is visiting Nepal on March 28-31, close on the heels of a planned visit by Chinese defence minister Chang Wanquan.

Rawat was invited by Nepal government soon after he assumed office in December.

“The main purpose of the visit is to confer the honorary title of Nepal Army to General Rawat,” said Nepal Army spokesperson Gen Tara Bahadur Kari.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandrai will confer the title to Rawat on March 29 at a special function for his “commendable military prowess and immeasurable contribution to fostering India’s long-standing and friendly ties with Nepal” and given the special military ties between Nepalese and Indian armies.

It has been a custom between the armies of the two friendly neighbours to confer the title to each other’s army chiefs since 1950 to signify the close military-to-military ties.

Gen Rawat will hold meeting with President Bidhya Devi Bhandrai, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and defence minister Bal Krishna Khad.

He will also visit Pokhara and Muktinath, where Nepal Army runs a high-altitude military warfare training centre.

Issues related to purchase of military hardware and software for Nepal Army will come up for discussion. Nepal Army makes almost all military and defence purchase from India including helicopters.

The proposed three-day visit of Chinese defence minister to Nepal from March 23 and upcoming China-Nepal joint military drill have made New Delhi “nervous:rofl:as Chang is also going to push Nepal to become the member of China’s ambitious, One Belt One Belt initiative, a flagship foreign policy initiative by President Xi Jinping.

The visit of Chinese defence minister, whose programme is yet to be made public, is closely followed in New Delhi due to China’s push for joint military exercise and possible defence and military cooperation between Kathmandu and Beijing where Kathmandu is looking for logistic support for its UN Peacekeepers.

After completing Nepal visit, the Chinese defence minister will leave for Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s government cannot afford to say no to Beijing for the visit of Chinese defence minister and the joint military drill at a time when he himself is visiting China from March 24 to participate in Boao Asia Forum in Hainan Province.

During his official trip to Beijing, Prachanda will be meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping and other senior Chinese leaders.

We should consider offering Nepal a dedicated freight corridor for import of their goods from any point in India or any ships bound for Nepal in India.

Also people should be allowed to register ships in Nepal's name on Indian ports.

This of course, should be mutually beneficial.

A railway line has been offered by India to Nepal which will connect catchment areas of Nepal to sea ports in India. It will reduce cost of freight and ensure Nepalese products get exposure to good market. It can also ensure energy security to the nation.
Hope Nepal decides quickly on the same so that IRCON can start work.

That's awesome.

But is it the same one that connects the passenger travel between Bihar and Nepal?

If that's the one then it is just a narrow gauge line. Looking at the kind of trade concessions we might want to mutually benefit from, that won't be sufficient?

Agreed

Thats a narrow gauge line and in a very sad state. Indian railways is looking to re-gauge it to Broad Gauge as maintenance of ZDM series narrow gauge locos is becoming very difficult.
the newer BG line supports much higher axle load and therefore heavier trains can run increasing freight loading and therefore trade volume.
btw there are two projects on anvil:

(i) Jogbani-Biratnagar (Nepal)(18.60 Km) new line project:- 5.45 Km length falls in India & 13.60 km falls in Nepal. Land for the entire project, except for a length of about 1.8 Km falling in Nepal, has been acquired and earthwork, bridge works etc. taken up.

(ii) Jaynagar-Bijalpura gauge conversion & its extension up to Bardibas (69 Km):- 3 Km length falls in India & 66 km falls in Nepal. Final location Survey has been completed. Land plans for Indian portion has been submitted to the State Government. In Nepal portion, land has been handed over in 47 km. in patches. Earthwork & bridgework have been taken up in the stretches where land is available.

This tradition of the Chiefs of each others Army being conferred Honorary Ranks in each others Armies has been going on for Decades. You obviously did not read the article you posted for it says the same thing.

The link above will show of a similar act in 2016, think the Nepali Chief came to steal secrets ?
