Protesters in the southern Indian city of Bangalore in Karnataka state have attacked shops and set fire to vehicles in a long-running dispute about water.

They were angry at a Supreme Court ruling ordering Karnataka to share more water with neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Karnataka must release 12,000 cubic feet of water per second from the Cauvery river until 20 September.

Both states say they urgently need the water for irrigation and a battle about access to it has raged for decades.

The violence in the technology hub closed many offices and much of the public transport system.

Police have imposed an emergency law that prohibits public gatherings, and more than 15,000 officers have been deployed.

Reuters reported that Tamil Nadu registered vehicles were being singled out by protesters and pelted with stones.

As wrote in the other thread, instead of supporting terrorism in the neighboring countries, India must check her own internal conflicts.

The current Indian policy of interference in other countries and sponsorship of terrorism is bound to fail. At some stage neighbors are going to get p!ssed and might retaliate by providing moral support to so many insurgencies in India.

So India, there is still time, put your own house in order instead of setting neighborhood on fire!

Thank you for your concern & advice. Please remember it the next time there is a mass stabbing incident in Kunming or an attempted suicide bombing in Tiananmen Square or ( my favourite ) Uighurs attaching Hans in Urumqi.

Perhaps Comrade Xi would also like a word with Iron Brothers Sharif & Sharif then .

I am currently living in bengaluru and I am tamilian. There is only small gangs of non-locals in the main key highways causing ruckus, most shops away from main roads are open and 16 areas are in curfew. The curfew is just for namesake, life is pretty normal here.
On a lighter note , I ate a lot of biryani from my Muslim neighbors house :D (chicken) and got a ton of calls from concerned kannadigas from my workplace :-) , talked most about mass bunking office for two more days :undecided:.

There has always been tension b/w kannadigas and tamils in sharing Cauvery river water. As the population grew , the demand for more water followed. The rioting has been a normal occurrence b/w the two states, but only made to look worse by social media this time around, infact it has died down significantly since 1980's.This is nothing compared to those days.
This will blow over soon as always, same thing happened 10 to 12 years ago which was much worse than this, kannadigas are extremely kindhearted people ,these riots had happened before and will happen again if the water scarcity is not met.

Solution :
Interlinking of Indian rivers along with much more efficient farming methods. The former is in progress at fast phase and the later is very improving slowly. Now the urgency of this project has just increased.
