India walks diplomatic tightrope on Myanmar

Well just remember one thing, GOI is elected by the Indians for the welfare of Indians not to look after the world populace. Whatever is good for indian interests would be done.

Well Said. Needed to be highlighted.

In this case India must have been an exampelary welfare state for the rest of the world.

Still, I personally would never support any welfare at the cost of mayhem in another state.

No one said we are one , we are only interested in our own , if we do sometihing after we have looked after our interest then fine but not visa versa...

It is in India's interests to preserve the current regime, which happens to be pro-India.

However, if India can somehow use all possible peaceful means and somehow create a democratic myanmar, it will be a fantastic victory for India. It will earn us great respect internationally and create a true ally state.
It is of course a risky option and might lead to unexpected consequences.

It happens to be seen if the Indian government takes the safe route or the route more risky but highly rewarding one.

Dear Assasin, I see no reason why would peaceful Monks of Myanmar may go against Indian interests.

Why dont you ask the same against China too?

Politics isnt that straight forward, freienship and favours are forgotten as easily as it happened. In the current setup India enjoys a good relation, there is no guarantee that it would continue after the junta is thrown away. In a democratic setup Indian companies would have to compete with European and American companies to drill in Myanmar's oil and gas fields, while at present we need only think about China.

'India is close to signing an agreement with the Burmese military junta to develop the port of Sittwe, officials in Delhi have said.'
BBC NEWS | South Asia | India 'close to Burma port deal'

India is no shying away from dealing with the junta even when there is severe pressure on Newdelhi to cut off ties. Well i guess this renewed 'follow interests' policy has been forced upon us by the chineese. If we dont, they will. Then why not we do it.
