Jun 04, Colombo: Both India and the United States have commended the progress in Sri Lanka's path towards national reconciliation and promised assistance to Sri Lanka to attain sustainable peace.

On the sidelines of the 2012 Shangri-La Dialogue Sri Lanka's External Affairs Minister Prof G. L. Peiris and Secretary Defense Gotabhaya Rajapaksa have met with theUS Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey, and the Defense Minister of India A. K. Anthony.

During the meeting, the Sri Lankan Minister has comprehensively apprised the two defense officials of Sri Lankan government's plans for the national reconciliation which also included the plans for the rehabilitation, reconstruction and the socio-economic development of the conflict affected Northern and Eastern parts of the country.

Both USA and India had commended the "incremental and steady progress being made in these areas and were keen to assist Sri Lanka in all aspects of their multifaceted bilateral partnership for attaining sustainable peace," a Defense Ministry statement said.

The 11th Shangri- La Dialogue held in Singapore from June 1-3, has recognized Sri Lanka's significant location in the Indian Ocean as a coastal nation and the pivotal role its Navy could play in strengthening the security of sea lanes in the Indian Ocean and has resolved to co-operate closely in drawing on their synergies in combating international terrorism.

The Defense Ministry said the Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has requested both USA and India, two key strategic partners of Sri Lanka, for enhanced training opportunities for capacity building of Sri Lankan defence personnel in their institutes of repute and both India and US had responded positively to the request.

Prof. Peiris Saturday (02) presented a speech at one of the special sessions on South Asia's Growing Security Threats.

The Minister has explained the significant role played by Sri Lanka in curbing international terrorism by ending a 30 year terrorist conflict and the country's progress in achieving national reconciliation and sustainable economic development at the session.

Minister Peiris has also held bilateral discussions with Minister for Defence of Singapore Dr. NG Eng. Hen and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh Dr. Dipu Moni.

I am sure the Lankan defense secretary will cancel his request after seeing your post

They cannot thwart the ' String of Pearls ' policy of China by introducing such ploys.

No, Thanks India!

you should tell that to your govt.:

Peace and Military training are two different things. Sri Lanka should achieve peace by its own solution and by its own citizens.

Peace is achieved by a competent militia.
Even then tell your govt. to find its own solution, cuz so far the only solution they got is to request India & US for military training.

that must $uck for people like you though :chilli::bunny::laugh:

As a person living in Sri Lanka I know what our goals are, I'm glad about our Secretary of defence. 2 birds from one stone

@skyline, make up your mind dude, your posts are contradictory.

But curious though, why did you personally, not wish to accept assistance:

No problem at all even it is India or any other country, the question is how much "honest" is India with the activities they have done to Sri Lanka.

I personally like more cooperating with USA and EU countries, then balance cooperating with India and China.

We should restrict our assistance to the same way we are doing with Afghanistan. Provide construction and developmental support. Provide military support purely from a training perspective. And in the next few years we will have our IN / ICG ships being replaced by newer classes. Hand them over to the Sri Lankan Navy for their use. Include the SL Navy, even if in a small way, during Malabar exercises.

Cheers!

the question isn't how honest India is with its activities but rather your ideological aspirations as to how honest you want it to be.
As to co-operating with US & EU, why would you think they would be any fairer in their assessments to deal with, much more so than with India?
