India is likely to give its approval to a landmark military communications agreement with the United States during high-level talks on Thursday, two Indian government defence sources said, laying the ground for Washington to sell sensitive defence equipment.

A first source said the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) was discussed in a meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet committee on security on Wednesday evening, hours ahead of a meeting between the defence and foreign heads of India and the United States.

"It will be a positive development tomorrow," the source said, declining to be named given the sensitivity of the matter. "It will definitely be reflected in the joint statement."

A second government defence source said there was "high expectation" that the agreement would be signed on Thursday by US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and India's Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The agreement has also been customised to address Indian concerns, said the second source, who had been briefed on the matter. It would only apply to equipment that India buys from the United States and not open up the rest of the Indian military to US communications networks, said the source.

A government spokesman did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Earlier this year, an Indian defence source told Reuters that New Delhi had shed its opposition to the agreement.

Indian and US officials have been seeking a breakthrough in the talks over the COMCASA to expand defence cooperation between the world's two largest democracies.

Under the agreement, the militaries of the two countries would be able to securely communicate with each other. The United States said the agreement is essential to extend defence ties between the countries.

India has historically been opposed to the agreement because it sees it as being too intrusive.

On Thursday, Mattis and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will hold talks with India's Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Sitharaman for the so-called two-plus-two discussions in New Delhi.

"We hope we can find opportunities to continue to expand the relationship, not only diplomatic and military to military, but a good set of business relationships as well between the two countries," Pompeo told reporters on Tuesday, calling India the United States' "only major defence partner

US’ Comcasa assurance: Won’t share India data without consent

IMO, India shouldn't go ahead with this. Is there a possibility to retract the deal in the future if things don't go as planned?

Yet another step towards more prosperity. Good.
I don't know which country I am talking about.

COMCOSA offers military encryption that is generations above what the Indian military uses. Current Indian systems are easily crackable and we see examples of this yearly.
In an age where digital warfare will take a more prominent role, secure military communications and access to US real time satellite and intelligence information is a win win for India

This is just bad.

I remember having this discussion with you before.

It's not bad. There are some technologies the US possesses that we can use, and it can be done without compromising our own security.

For example, the Guardian and Avenger drones require COMCASA in order to use the drone specific comm equipment. And the drones will be able to communicate with the P-8I with an American link, which in turn will be able to communicate with the rest of our navy, including the Mig-29s, with an Indian link.

And we will be able to use the P-8s to communicate with American ships and satellites also. We will also be able to launch satellites with both America and India-specific comm systems that will allow interoperability without sacrificing our own capability.

We will come out of it immediately. We don't care about any super power.

Maybe so in the past, but not so now and in the near future. We are developing our own SDRs and comm links. We do not need the Americans for this.

Example:

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the meeting of Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) and approved procurement of over 260 software-defined-radio (naval communication) sets under the category of buy (India Designed Developed & Manufactured) at a cost of over Rs 490 crore.

But we are depending on the Israelis, particularly for fighter jets.

good job india hope india sign LSA and BECA also .

LSA was the first to get signed , about a year ago i think
COMCASA is the second

means P8I can act as adaptor between US & Indian LINK ?

If this happen then i am waiting for Congress to make this a issue and then we will vote Modi ji out.
