Bangladesh will import 250 MW of power from neighbouring India, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said.

At the same time, she promised to increase the country’s power generation to 24,000 MW, if voted to power.

“Our promise of reaching power to every house is close to fulfilment,” she said at a function launching the construction of a 53 MW power plant in Ashuganj on Saturday.

She said private companies were responding to the government’s appeal and investing in the power sector.

Hasina said that the previous BNP-led government and the caretaker administration that followed did not care to set up new power stations, while doing little for the maintenance of the running ones.

“The present government has set up 55 power stations in the past four and a half years, taking total power generation capacity to 8,537 MW,” the Prime Minister said.

She said another 34 plants with a 6,951 MW capacity were being built. The tender processes for 19 more with a 3,974 MW capacity are being finalised.

The government, she said, was also boosting renewable power production.

Hasina reeled off several initiatives to set up coal-based power plants and nuclear power facilities with Russian help.

She also laid the foundation stones of five power plants having a capacity of 1,301 MW.

Financed by Export Credit Agency, the Ashuganj Power Station Company Limited will execute the $613 million project.

India to Supply 250 mW of Power to Bangladesh said by Sheikh Hasina and brought to you by eastwatch. Can anyone believe in this Awami lie?

Tripura’s power export stalled

“We want to give Bangladesh 100MW from our share in this project. Delhi can give more from its share of power in this project,” Sarkar told bdnews24.com.
“But the Centre ( India’s union government) has not yet responded to our proposal for reasons best known to it,” Manik Sarkar told bdnews24.com.

@idune, your Tripura statement is about seven months old and I was the starter of that thread. I started the present thread only last night. So, how can it be compared? Situation changes all the time.

But, is it true that SHW is lying about supplying of 250 mW of electricity? I wonder why India has become so kind when Mujahid has been found guilty of torture and killing, and will be hanged.

ANNY PROOF at all?Or just more 'theories'?

Go and ask your politicians. They can testify to what I have said. But, India is becoming more and more unable to suppress our rise from a country of poverty to a country of possibilities. So, India should not waste its money and energy on people in BD to work for it. Poor Indians need that money.

You are just acting as Awami and Sheikh Hasina's mouth piece here. Sheikh Hasina and Awami League had said many lies over time and if you want to defend those blatant lie and become laughing stock that is your choice. But until you and your Awami League can show electricity being provided, all such Awami statement, including yours are pure hogwash.

They are two separate deals. This 250 mW will be supplied from West Bengal out of the Eastern Grid and not from Tripura. The line is capable of upto 500mW transfer, however at this stage only 250mW has been negotiated. It can be jacked up to 500mW later on, depending on the surplus availability and Bangladesh's demands.

A power purchase agreement has been inked between NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) on Tuesday.

Besides, BPDB is expected to purchase additional 250 MW from the Indian power market and discussions are underway, the NTPC official said today.

The transmission systems between the two nations is expected to be completed by end of July 2013.

The electrical grid interconnection between the two countries would be through a 1X500 MW HVDC back-to-back asynchronous link between the eastern region of India and Western Grid of Bangladesh.

The grid will facilitate cross-border power transfer of 500 MW.

The NTPC official said the HVDC unit will be established at Bheramara and the existing 230 kV Ishurdi-Khulna South D/C line will be looped-in and looped-out at Bheramara.

"On the India side, 400 kV switching station will be created at Baharampur in West Bengal (Eastern part of India) by loop-in-loop out of the existing 400 kV Farakka-Jeerat S/C line.

"The cross-border interconnection will be established by Baharampur (India) -- Bheramara (Bangladesh) 400 kV D/C line," the official said.

The transmission system on the Indian side will be executed by Power Grid Corporation of India, which would also provide consultancy to Bangladesh, up to the commissioning for the project.

NTPC has an installed capacity of over 36,000 MW.
