India to raise 30 Infantry Battalions

Modernization of Army including Infantry is a continuous process, based on threat perception, operational necessity, technological changes and available resources. Combat capacity and mobility of Infantry is being upgraded as per the Long Term Perspective Plan (LTPP).

30 Infantry Battalions are proposed to be raised in the Thirteenth 5 year Plan towards enhancing combat capacity.

Mobility of Infantry is proposed to be enhanced through introduction of superior vehicles with better cross country mobility, as stated by Defence Minister AK Antony in the parliament.

The budgetary allocation for capital acquisition for modernization of Army during Financial Year 2012-2013 is Rs.13724.14 crore.

This must be part of the new mountain strike corps being raised, or the two new mountain divisions being raised. Otherwise, it makes no sense to raise 30 infantry battalions just like that in an army that is already bloated with respect to the infantry to other arms ratio.

I wonder which regiments these will go to.

Ideally though, we should have raised the MSC from the existing strength, without increasing manpower. Increased combat power per soldier, but lesser number of foot soldiers, like other modern armies. This would keep costs low in the long run, and bring more value for money.

We are planning two front war scenario , and remember that any war involving china will ultimately involve Pakistan , so we need enough manpower to tackle both and we are upgrading our infantry .

No, those were already completed just before Bikram Singh became army chief, while he was the eastern army commander.

Raising of two infantry divisions sanctioned in the 11th Plan was completed by me when I was Eastern Army Commander. These formations are today operationally effective. Our proposal [to raise the new mountain strike corps] is undergoing the process of vetting and validation.

This has to be for the new strike corps. Put together, this new formation is really massive on the eastern front. At least four new mountain divisions (infantry), and several regiments of armor and artillery, is massive firepower. Also, since the new corps will have integral aviation assets and be highly air mobile, we are looking at a specialized strike corps with massive firepower and mobility, and every soldier trained for mountain warfare. This should make our eastern front completely secure in a realistic sense, even if we cant match China on the infrastructure front or in terms of sheer numbers of soldiers they can bring. This is truly a strategic move, of much more significance and impact than it suggests on paper.
