KOLKATA: India is set to become power surplus this year. The country is likely to produce 1.1% more power than necessary, compared with a deficit of 2.1% last year, show government estimates.
The peak-period surplus is estimated to be 2.6% against last year's deficit of 3.2%. But there will still be pockets facing high deficit due to transmission constraints, a report prepared by the
Central Electricity Authority said.
Demand or supply during evenings, when power consumption rises the most, is taken for peak-period measurements. The annual peak demand or supply is the sum total of demand or supply during that period.
"State-wise power supply position shows that almost half of the states would be either surplus or balanced, and the remaining states would face both peaking and energy shortages in varying degrees during 2016-17," said SD Dubey, chairman of the Central Electricity Authority. "However, the actual shortage would depend on the extent to which the state is able to get additional power from the surplus states."

The authority estimates demand and supply for each year. According to the study, South and West are expected to witness surplus energy generation of 3.3% and 6.9%, respectively. North, East and Northeast, on the other hand, are set to face shortages of 1.8%, 10.3% and 8.3%, respectively.
Peak shortages are likely to prevail mainly in the North, South and Northeast, at 1.6%, 10.0% and 3.8%, respectively.
The assessment of anticipated power supply position during 2016-17 has been made taking into consideration power availability from various stations in operation, including non-conventional energy sources , fuel availability and anticipated water availability at hydel power stations.
This estimation has considered a total capacity addition of 16,654 Mw during 2016-17 — 13,440.5 Mw of thermal, 1,714 Mw of hydro and 1,500 Mw of nuclear.
Gross energy generation has been estimated at 1,178 billion units from conventional power plants in operation and those expected to be commissioned during the year.

We are getting power cuts on daily basis here in Hyderabad. How can we be power surplus???

That is because the poor financial situation of state DISCOMS and giving away free power to some sections means that they prefer powercuts to buying power.

But why do they target people who pay the premium for their power?? It is a losing proposition for DI.SCOMS.

Most discoms sell power at subsidized rates to farmers, homeowners, etc. The only people who are charged market rates are commercial users.

It probably means people have low demand of electricity.....

Yeah in per capita electricity demand, India is no where in the league of developed countries even though last year there was an increase of per capita demand by 18% compared to previous year. We are also adding good amount of installed capacity every year..

Surplus is better than deficit....People's demand will eventually grow.

Why then the high power bill when we have surplus? Also, we our power Consumption average is less than the world average.

I agree, power is one area where we have been kicking *** recently the whole sector is being cleaned up the government

From 2015 to 2016 India added 30,000 MW of electricity, that's a good growth....

Currently indian electricity production stands at 3,05,550 MW by August,2016

I don't know why people even worry about it....
Look at the number of A/C in India.
India is actually much hotter than China....But we have way more A/C than India...
60 million A/C were sold in 2013....And electricity consumption of A/C can be as high as 40% during summer.
I think A/C and A/C-related electricity consumption will be a major focus in India....

The number of CDDs in India is one of the biggest...

table-2.jpg

Automation is driving prices of A/C down

Technology of A/C is maturing

I guess you won't need A/C for heating in -30 degree environment....

India power surplus is a half truth. 300 million Indians are still without power. The govt is putting in best effort to provide all Indians electricity. We have a good power minister. India has a enough coal to meet any power requirement. The demand for AC has increased manifold in last few years. China has more AC because average Chinese earns much more. Given the hotter climate, India will one day have more AC than any country in the world.
