India to host 6th Mekong-Ganga meet

Ahead of the India-ASEAN commemorative summit in December, New Delhi will host the sixth ministerial meeting of the six-nation Mekong-Ganga cooperation initiative on Tuesday, with the objective of strengthening connectivity, and promoting cultural and tourism exchanges. This will be the first meeting after a four-year hiatus, and for the first time New Delhi will be hosting the meeting.

The meeting will witness participation of five Mekong region countries — Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. External Affairs Minister S M Krishna will chair the meeting, which will focus on speeding up connectivity and exploring ways to boost economic, cultural and tourism exchanges.

On Monday, senior officials of the participating countries will meet to firm up the agenda.

The Mekong-Ganga meet comes ahead of the ASEAN-India commemorative summit here in December to mark the 20th anniversary of the ASEAN-India partnership and the 10th anniversary of ASEAN-India Summit-level partnership.

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister H O R Namhong, Lao Deputy Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, Myanmarese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs U Maung Myint, Thailand Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Jullapong Nonscrichai and Vietnam Foreign Minister Pham Quang Vinh will participate in the meeting.

The grouping was formed in 2000 to leverage cultural and civilisational affinities among riparian states of the Ganga and Mekong rivers.

There seems to have a agenda here. A meeting without the most important country where the two rivers originated and why the biggest beneficiary of one of the river is not here as well.

Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand are all old friends of India, but we have neglected them for years now thanks to china's string of pearls we have initiated a chain of steel and look east policy and the results are all there to see. :smokin:

True. You you remember your old friends only when you need them. :what:

If you do not need them, then you do not hesitate to back-stab them. :hitwall: That's India.

Singapore is a close friend of India too .... and there are plenty of other forums where they keep meeting, collaborating, discussing.

And then Singapore is anyways a member of ASEAN and India-ASEAN have close ties itself.

Which nations are these? Singapore is one of them I am guessing?

China doesn't have to get involved in everything...just keep an eye is good enough:azn:

I'm talking about China where the head waters of both rivers originated and Bangladesh, who's one of the primary user of the Ganga. Without them I would think the title of the thread or the Summit is a misnomer.

Except for Thailand, the rest of the Mekong river region are poor countries. We need the support of big friends to catch up with other countries in ASEAN. Of course all the cooperations based on win-win benefits.
the Mekong river region has also received the support of Japan and the US...
