Bhubaneswar: India Wednesday carried out a successful test of its nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Agni-I missile from a military base in Odisha, an official said.

The intermediate-range ballistic missile, which can strike a target 700 km away, was tested from a facility on Wheeler Island near Dhamra in Bhadrak district, 170 km from here.

The test was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command of the Indian armed forces as part of a training exercise to ensure preparedness, director of the Integrated Test Range, M.V.K.V. Prasad, said.

"The mission was successful," he said.

Scientists from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which developed the missile, witnessed and supervised the test, Prasad added.

.
For A1 any new missile specification was tested or else same routine old one??

. .
...this appears to be random user test which was successful.

I do remember one of our neighbor's user test resulting in bits and pieces of rocket falling all over their villages :P

700 kms are not intermediate...

Is there any plan to phase out Agni I, considering we have developed other missile that come under the same range?

I am not aware of any other ballistic missile with the same range. As per my understanding, following are the different missile with different ranges:

Agni-I MRBM 700 – 1,250 km
Agni-II IRBM 2,000 – 3,000 km
Agni-III IRBM 3,500 – 5,000 km
Agni-IV IRBM 3,000 – 4,000 km
Agni-V ICBM 5,000 – 8,000 km

What other missile are you reffering to?
