India successfully testfires home-made supersonic interceptor missile

NEW DELHI, March 1 (Xinhua) -- India on Wednesday successfully testfired a home-made supersonic interceptor missile from a military base off the coast of the eastern state of Odisha, sources said.

The Advanced Air Defense (AAD) missile, which can destroy incoming enemy ballistic missiles at low altitudes, successfully intercepted a Prithvi missile within minutes, the sources said.

The AAD missile, developed by the state-owned Defense Research and Development Organization, is actually a 7.5-meter single-stage rocket-propelled guided missile equipped with a navigation system and a computer.

It was not the first time that an AAD missile was tested. It was first testfired in May 2016.

In February, India successfully testfired an interceptor missile at high altitude.
