India studies Chinas clean-upHow China is cleaning up the Yangtze could soon inspire technology to cleanse the Yamuna and Indias polluted rivers and lakes.
On Tuesday in Beijing, a team led by environment minister Jairam Ramesh made plans with the Chinese to begin interactions between scientists of both nations as they battle the same environmental hazards.
Ramesh spent the day taking notes on how Chinas army of hundreds of PhD-level scientists is using the latest technology to battle water pollution.
Were spending the money on cleaning rivers and not showing results, Ramesh told the media.
In November, Indian specialists will visit Beijing to study Chinese technology to clean-up rivers and lakes.
Next year, Chinese scientists will be invited to mingle in the annual Indian Science Congress. They said they have a lot of regard for Indian scientists, he said.
The team visited the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences and was inspired to plan a similar integrated network for environmental research in India.
Theres no such structured environmental research framework in India, Ramesh pointed out after visiting the Academy of about 400 scientists. Its a good idea to emulate for India.
On Indias suggestion, the Chinese agreed to propose Indias inclusion in an annual research network between environmental scientists of China, Japan and Korea. India requested collaboration with Chinese specialists and the upcoming National Institute for Sustainable Coastal Zone Management in Chennai.
Ramesh also visited a 400 MW power and heat generation plant in Beijing and said that its maintenance was superior to the best comparable plants in India.
