The first consignment of 100 tonnes non-Basmati rice will leave for China from Nagpur on Friday.
The two countries signed an agreement for export of other rice varieties when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Qingdao in June this year.
“The consignment will be received by China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO), which is one of China's state-owned food processing holding companies. After concerted efforts of the Government of India, 19 rice mills and processing units have been registered for export of non-basmati rice from India to China,” Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on Thursday.
The June agreement amended an existing photo-sanitary arrangement the two countries had agreed to in 2006 to include export of non-basmati varieties of rice from India. The Chinese had so far resisted India’s push of other varieties of rice to one of the world’s biggest markets.
The agreement calls for stricter regulation of India’s rice exports, and sets conditions such as pest-free processing and storage of the proposed exports.
India has been pushing for greater rice exports to Beijing in an attempt to bridge wide trade deficits with the country. India’s trade deficit with China now stands at $63 billion, up from $52 billion in 2016-2017.
