India & Sri Lanka Reviewing Relations

Sri Lanka & India to revive the Indo-Lanka Joint Commission (Economic), Military to Military ties.

The Indo-Lanka Joint Commission is scheduled to meet at end of this month, while four Indian ships will arrive this week for a joint training exercise mission.

The visiting ships of the First Training Squadron of the Indian Navy comprises INS Tir, INS Shardul, INS Tarangini and Coast Guard vessel Varuna. Of them, INS Tarangini will arrive at the Colombo port, while the rest will reach Trincomalee on Saturday (Oct 9).

Altogether about 150 SLN personnel will receive an opportunity to train onboard Indian ships.

Authoritative Indian sources say the Indo-Lanka Joint Commission last met in Colombo in June, 2005.

Indian and Sri Lankan sources say diplomatic relations are stable and trade, investment, infrastructural linkages and defence cooperation are improving.

There is a general, broad-based improvement across all sectors of bilateral cooperation, sources say.
