With the Kaveri jet engine programme stalled due to technological challenges, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is planning to set up a new complex to develop jet engines for future Indian fighter aircraft.

This report in the Economic Times says that the complex may develop a completely new jet engine, one that can provide a thrust of 110 kilo newtons.

The engine, which may come up within seven years of starting work, will be used for the future class of Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), the fifth generation fighter currently in development for the Indian Air Force.

“The new engine complex is being set up as a national mission to develop a 110 kilo newton powered engine for the future class of AMCA and could produce the engine within seven years of starting work,” the report says.

This development comes at a time when the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has come down heavily on the government’s offset policy for defence procurement, saying that the transfer of technology to DRDO for reviving the stalled Kaveri engine programme, part of the deal, has not been completed.

“DRDO wanted to obtain Technical Assistance for the indigenous development of engine (Kaveri) for the Light Combat Aircraft. Till date, the Vendor has not confirmed the transfer of this technology,” the CAG says in its report.

It was not clear if the transfer will even take place, the CAG added.

In this respect, the Economic Times report says the new complex may receive French assistance in the development of the new jet engine and discussions for the same are currently on between the two sides.

3bn$ and 30 years of kaveri

revive it 3rd time we are happy

Depends how you think and approach....

Till now Pakistan never tried to make anything and still buying or purchasing the OEM Military products. And, will purchase even after 100s of year if the approach will not be changed.

I hope, you will understand what i said... Thanks

we are happy with it . we should do what we are capable to do . not like indians pole nose in everything waste money and got nothing kaveri - arjun - LCA - and so on and then finally buy them from world .

So India cannot even develop a 70/80 kN engine called the Kaveri and now they want to develop a 110 kN engine? Are you kidding me??? These jokers at DRDO must be really high ... :disagree:
30 more years more budget and more relaxation . you know what ? if they di it in PAC they may face court marshal .

India does not even have dedicated high altitude testing facilities for gas turbines so they had to send it to Russia for testing. The Russians told the Indians the testing results were shit, leading to the cancellation of the Kaveri    .
Relax there is no hurry !

Even chinese have been a total failure when it came to jet engine design !
Right because the J-20 now has domestic engines? You guys are complete jokes :omghaha:

Sorry, I am not agree and never can be.

1st LCA is not failed. Little late but more than enough if I look at our neighbors.

Yes, we are failed on Arjun Tank and Kaveri Engine. However, we got many things including experience, infrastructure etc...

I would give example of Helicopter and ship manufacturing. If we have thought the same way (Pakistan thinks) than we could never be able to make them.

Rest, people are free to troll like fawad chaudhry on chandrayaan 2...... We don't mind. Thanks

if china can not do its means indian can not do it in next 100 years as india is 100 years behind china .

But sir, gas turbine manufacturing is much more difficult than making helicopters or shipbuilding. India does not even have high altitude testing facilities for gas turbines, which is a basic for countries serious about making gas turbines. That is why the Kaveri had to undergo tests in Russia instead of locally.
