What's new

India’s first Military University by next month

. . .
Didn't Pune University served as a military University for Indian Armed Forces, as there are many courses on Weapon systems and such, where only graduates from NDA are admitted, not GATE qualified civilians like me.

Pune University and JNU are two universities that the Defence Academies and Institutes are affiliated to. But some institutes like DIAT (Defence Institute of Armament Technology) are now autonomous and bestow their own degrees. Then DSSC is affiliated to Madras University.

Military is quite neglected in India. Sadly.

That is incorrect. Not in academics. Every post-commission course leads to a Degree, PG Degree or Diploma.

.
I meant military is neglected by the political class. Military needs are not understood nor in public minds as much as it should be.

.
Since it is being set up in NCR/ NCT, among the courses offered ought to be a compulsory six week crash course on imperatives of defence planning for MP's.

This should be run between parliament Sessions and all MPs must attend one such course during their 5 year term.

This should sensitise the decision makers & budget Passers to Defence needs and understand the nuances of Defence Planning.

What "Military needs" are misunderstood? It is just that "Strategic needs" are misunderstood.
That is misunderstood by whom? By the ruling Political Estt to the greater extent and the Bureaucracy to a much lesser extent. The general public has little if nothing to do with it.
The public at large gives all the required importance to the Military, i.e. respect.

Pakistan has a Military University since 1963. (Someone just pointed out.)

Really speaking this step is purely aministrative in nature. An effort to bring all Defence and Strategic studies under one umbrella. The NDC (National Defence College) was set up in 1960 in New Delhi as the Premier Defence Traiining Institution for Military and Govt. Officers in India. It was set up to the same standards as the Imperial Defence College in UK (later called RCDS). The NDA has existed from 1953, the IMA from even earlier, to 1932. If you talk about the CME (College of Military Engineering), it was established in 1943 though it got its final location in 1951. The OTA (officers Training Academy) dates back to 1963. The AFMC was established in 1948. The Army War College in Mhow was set up as the College of Combat in 1971. The DSSC in Wellington traces its history back to 1905 when it was set up as the Army Staff College in Deolali. The College of Defence Management in Secunderabad goes back to 1970. As the then IDM, the logistics chain for the 1971 campaign was a result of an early study by it. And there are many other institutions across the three services.

So Military Education and Training system right upto the highest level has existed in India for a long time. One issue has been University affiliation since these Institutions have been issuing Degrees, PG Degrees, Diplomas for long. The NDA has been affiliated to JNU. The CME and AFMC have had affiliation to PU, the DSSC to MU, the AWC to Indore University, the CDM to OU and so on.
This Indian National Defence University will become a single-node affiliation unit for all Defence Institutes, leading to admin simplification.
Not too much else is required since each Institute has well established and evolved curricula of studies in place for a long time already.
