India Receives Jolt as Bangladesh Supports China's Belt and Road Initiative

updated 15:40 07.10.2017

India views China's Belt and Road Initiative as a challenge to its own economic aspirations, as well as a challenge to its sovereignty. A portion of the project passes through the Kashmir region, part of which is currently held by Pakistan but India claims as its own.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — India's ally and neighbor Bangladesh has voiced its support to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), much to India's concern. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque said that his country supports China's massive regional infrastructure project as economic integration was the need of the hour.

"In the case of Bangladesh, we realized that we are geographically very small but we have, in order to overcome those limitations, to weave ourselves in with the rest of the world. That's why economic, social and political issues remain very fundamental to our state practices irrespective of government," Shahidul Haque said.

While speaking at the ongoing World Economic Forum in India Shahidul Haque contended that the new generation wants much more connectivity and integration.

"What we need is quick upgradation [upgrade] of our infrastructure and our generation wants much more interaction and connectivity," Mr Haque said.

The BRI envisages massive construction of road and railway connecting 65 countries of the world via a singular continuous trade corridor. Many countries have supported this initiative by China, but India views it as a strategic ploy by China to encircle it. While the BRI has already made its way to India's west in Pakistan as well as to the north in the disputed Kashmir region, support of its immediate eastern neighbor Bangladesh has added to its worries. Another eastern neighbor Nepal has already agreed to be part of BRI.

One part of the BRI, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, passes through Kashmir — part of which is presently controlled by Pakistan but is claimed by India. More than that, India fears that infrastructure projects in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region would push unviable investments, neo-colonial dependencies and potential political turmoil in a part of the world that has an impact on India. India also regards it as a check on its own regional political aspirations.

Why India should even get hurt by this choice??..Rather i find no reason for BD not be a part of this initiative...

@idune,

Now that BD has supported PRC on OBOR, you can expect their support on Ros, no?

Regards

BD relationship with China is deep enough for BD to criticise china for their stance regarding burma whilst carrying on with the bigger objective of economic growth.

Why would we support Indias position.... would that have resulted in your support on the rohingys issue? even if it did, you have no capacity to assist in any matter anyhow.

BD is a sovereign state, you have interfered and have helped hasina stay in power illegally but when it comes to geopoliics you are not the most important factor in BD calculus. When it comes to China, Indias perspective is worth around zero.

I think, this is where we are making an mistake in our approach. India should have an problem with CPEC because, it goes through the disputed territory not because of the initiative itself. If our foreign policy is designed to prevent others to not to join the initiave, then it will be going to be an epic fail.

If CPEC would not have gone through J&K disputed areas as per our stand, then even India should have joined if we see any benifit out of it.

Expect some terrorist drama for this. Terrorist drama game to suppress issues. Lately its not working anymore, because of exaggerated use and some exposed ones.
