India puts Air Force bases on high alert - People's Daily Online January 24, 2010

India Saturday put all its air forces bases on high alert, a day after the country's government ordered further strengthening of security at all airports and deployment of sky marshals on certain flights.

This followed intelligence inputs of a possibility of Pakistani- based terror groups hijacking a national airline flight operating to an unspecified South Asian country.

"Around Republic Day every year, the Indian Air Force puts its airbases around Delhi on a routine alert. This year also, we have followed suit," Indian Air Force spokesperson T.K. Singha told the media in the national capital.

India Friday put all its national airline flights, operating in South Asia, on high alert, following intelligence inputs from western agencies that Pakistan-based terror outfits have been mulling over flight hijack.

"The alerts have been issued by us and it is based on some intelligence inputs that we have received. We suspect that there can be an attempt to target one of our airlines especially those which fly abroad. We have alerted our agencies to be careful on anti-hijacking measures," U.K. Bansal, Special Secretary of Indian Internal Security, had said.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security had also issued an advisory to all airlines to conduct a mandatory 100 percent secondary ladder point check until Jan. 31 on all aircraft flying between these eight countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
