According to information published by TASS on September 7, 2021, a new generation of BrahMos cruise missile (BrahMos-NG) will be produced at a plant near Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh, India), according to Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh during his business visit to the region.
The BrahMos-NG cruise missile is scheduled to complete its trials in 2023.
The Brahmos missile has a flight range of about 290 km at supersonic speed throughout the flight, to reduce its flight time, thus ensuring less dispersal of targets and faster engagement time and not being intercepted by any known weapon system in the world. It operates on the principle of "Fire and Forget", adopting a variety of flights on its way to the target. Its destructive power is enhanced due to the large kinetic energy upon impact. It can reach a height of 15 km and a final height of up to 10 meters. The missile carries a conventional warhead weighing 200 to 300 kg.
BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) is a scaled down version based on the current BrahMos, it will have the same 290 km range and Mach 3.5 speed but will weigh about 1.5 tons, 5 meters long and 50 cm in diameter, making the BrahMos-NG 50 percent lighter and 3 meters shorter than the previous version.
