India probes arrested soldier’s link to Samjhota blast
* Investigators also probing source of funds distributed by arrested Abhinav Bharat activist to other members of group
By Iftikhar Gilani
NEW DELHI: Indian police is looking into the possibility of the involvement of an arrested military officer in the 2007 Samjhota train blast that killed 68 people, most of them Pakistani citizens.
The Indian Army was shocked at the arrest of 37-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Srikant Prasad Purohit, allegedly found in league with Hindu terrorists who carried out a recent bombing of a mosque in Malegaon in Maharashtra, which left six dead.
Sources said that the elite Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Maharashtra Police were also looking at the possibility of Purohit and others being involved in other explosions such as the 2004 Jalna blast, 2006 Nanded blast in Maharashtra and the February 17, 2007 Samjhota train bombing at Panipat in Haryana. Police had earlier blamed the Laskhar-e-Tayyaba for the blasts.
Funds: Investigators are also probing the source of funds that were distributed by arrested Hindu right wing Abhinav Bharat activist Ajay Rahirkar to other members of the group.
Swami Avdeshanand, a spiritual leader from Uttar Pradesh and a member of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), had also come under the ATS scanner for his connection with the alleged mastermind in the case -– Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur.
Meanwhile, criticising Maharashtra ATS for conducting repeated narcotics tests on Malegaon blast accused Thakur, the VHP said it would launch an agitation on the issue.
