India, Pakistan agree on uniform transit fee for TAPI pipeline

NEW DELHI: India and Pakistan today agreed in-principle to have a uniform transit fee for ferrying natural gas through the proposed USD 7.6 billion pipeline from Turkmenistan.

India will pay a transit fee to Pakistan and Afghanistan for getting its share of 38 million standard cubic metres per day of gas through the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline, while Islamabad has to pay ferrying charges only to Afghanistan for allowing passage of the fuel.

"Pakistan agreed in-principle that whatever transit fee formula is eventually settled between India and Afghanistan would also be acceptable to it and is subject to the approval of the competent authorities," said a statement issued by the Indian side after a meeting between Petroleum Minister S Jaipal Reddy and visiting Pakistani Oil Minister Asim Hussain.

In a joint press conference later, Reddy said, "There can't be one transit fee for India and Afghanistan and another for Pakistan and Afghanistan... It should be the same in-principle."

Echoing similar views, Pakistani Oil Minister Hussain said, "It is between the three countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan and India) to agree to it (uniform tariff). It is subject to the approval of competent authorities in both the governments."

The 1,735-km-long pipeline will run from Turkmenistan's Yoloten-Osman gas field to Herat and Kandahar province of Afghanistan, before entering Pakistan. In Pakistan, it will reach Multan via Quetta before ending at Fazilka (Punjab) in India.

Thank God they agree on something.

on topic...

I think thats a good initiative, this will also help reduce the trust deficit b/w the two countries and will also help meet their energy demands.

Still I am not on board for any deal with pakistan as we can't believe them. Their govt. specially civil politicians don't have credibility/authority. Tomorrow army can take over and derail the deal as they are the real power center, they are not developed democratically. If army can hang zulfikar ali bhutto a derailment of deal is nothing.

This pipeline worth USD 7.6 billion + gas tariff + transit fee to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

And for all of this we have to go by their guarantee.

This deal is not going to happen. So just relax. Pakistan is more interested in IP gas pipe line project and that is where all our efforts are going to be.
So Indians not believing us can keep their believe someplace safe, we don't need it anyways.

A pipeline through Pakistan is not in India's interests.

It's akin to handing over our lifeline to an enemy country so that they can snap it at will.

Someone better tell this to Pakistan's oil minister.

He isnt going to stick that long with elections coming. And by the way all this talk of not in India's interest, instead of flooding PDF, why don't you guys tell this to your Petroleum Minister.
