In a major peace initiative, India on Wednesday proposed to build pipelines to Pakistan if it provides long-term guarantees on buying petroleum products. India now has excess refining capacity and is exporting petrol and diesel, among other petroleum products, to various parts of the world, including Europe.

“We proposed exporting petroleum products and petrol to Pakistan. They have shown interest. We will work out the details in the next few weeks,” petroleum minister S. Jaipal Reddy said after meeting Pakistan’s oil minister Asim Hussain.
He said India was exporting petroleum products to distant countries, while Pakistan was importing them. Mr Reddy said the Pakistani minister “has kindly agreed to have this proposal considered within the ministry and the government there before responding”.
Dr Hussain said groups from both countries will meet soon to sort out the issue.
India has offered to export petrol, diesel, aviation turbine fuel (ATF), polyethylene and polypro-pylene, which Pakistan currently imports.
It was pointed out to Pakistan that it would save a lot in transport costs as several Indian refineries are close to the Pakistan border.
A India-Pakistan joint working group on petroleum and petrochemical products has been constituted recently to go into the specific details of facilitating trade in this sector. Both ministers agreed to advise their respective officials to hold the first meeting of the JWG at the earliest.
India currently has the refining capacity to process 193 million tonnes of crude oil annually, which is expected to rise to 232 million tonnes by 2012. India exports 59 million tonnes of petroleum products worth $43 billion annually.
Pakistan bans the import of petrol from India.
Pakistan had allowed diesel imports from India in 2009, but no Indian supplies were sent in the face of preferential prices offered by Pakistan’s Gulf allies.
On transit fees for the Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India (Tapi) gas pipeline, both sides agreed that negotiations would be held in a transparent manner, keeping in mind the overall economics of the project and in accordance with international practices.

I think it is a matter of pure business deal...If Pakistan feels that it is beneficial economically then it is not a bad for you.

This should only be done if India gives a fair deal to Pakistan; which by looking at the past record it has never given.

If such deals go through, it will be only because of commission junkies zardari/gilani and their cronies.

I think all financial deals with India should be put in COLD FREEZE status till the TRADE IMBALANCE is remedied with India and the WATER ISSUES are resolved. Pakistan should tie all trade with India within the context of barter trade. Pakistan currently imports 1500 million usd worth of goods and services from India versus India importing only 225 million usd worth of goods and services. This trade imbalance means transfer of wealth from Pakistan to India. Till these two issues are resolved, all trade with India should cease.

Dude...do you understand the logic when does a country buy a product from another country? ....Try to understand the basic economics...Pakistan will and should import prodcuts that he thinks that is beinificial financially to itself..So if you donot want to buy then some one else will buy the product...Take the example of petroleum product. I think the reason why this petroleum prodcut export has come up because, it is ecomomically cheaper for pakistan to get the gas from refinery that exists in Gujurat of India to Pakistan than pakistan importing this same prodcut from other countries..

And in case at any point of time PAKISTAN think that the price of Indian product is more than the other source...then simply scrap the deal...Its pure bussiness...

Can you explain to me how you to this conclusion, India granted Pakistan MFN status years ago, and still there was reply by the Pakistanis. India opened up its market to foreign competition and let the business decide which private industries can survive the international competition. Yet in Pakistan the industries were kept under safe guard by putting heavy taxes on foreign industries. It is not India's fault that Pakistani industries haven't matured to the full extent. To gain something you must also be aware that the world is profit and interest driven so everyone and every country gonna look at filling their own pockets and advancing their own interests. Any deal must find a common ground, otherwise its just gonna fall and never proceed.

Sure it might Improve Relations however until Kashmir is solved the conflict will still continue remember Pakistani's are highly emotional people. India should watch Pakistan Closely
