The Indian ministry of defence is in negotiations to purchase an additional airborne early warning system from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).


If the deal goes ahead, the AEW system will be deployed on an Ilyushin Il-76 transport aircraft, as with the three systems IAI supplied last year.
India's AEW aircraft are designed to integrate information from sensors carried on a number of manned and unmanned platforms.

What about their plan to deploy AIRAWATs in significant numbers? I thought we're supposed to get around 20+ of those to inter-link with the Phalcons and the rest of fighter jets. Is the Brazilian R-99 capable of flying in the high Himalayas to hold the AIRAWATs in case our Red friends get uppity? What's the news on that AEW guys?

I think it has been stated by defence experts and IAF officials that the total number of A-50 Phalcons in IAF service is likely to be 10 maybe 12, supplemented by significantly more DRDO AWACS. Attaining this Humber will likely to be done through a few batches of 2-3 systems at a time to account for significant price tag and integration of system into IAF.

i believe we should do a JV with Israel or Russia on a next generation AWACS and mount it on the NAL Indian regional jet when it is ready in 2017

In an interview sometime back, IAF chief said they will need 20 phalcon to cover the country. So more purchase is on the cards for sure. But in a phased manner.

10 Phalcon and 20 DRDO AWACS for IAF.

I am not sure but I think we have placed order for just 5 of them(phalcons) and rest would be drdo awacs. correct me if Iam wrong.
