A minister in India's resort state of Goa has drawn ridicule by saying women in bikinis should be banned from beaches and girls in short dresses should not visit pubs.

Sudin Dhavalikar, the state's public works department minister, told reporters on Tuesday that bikini wearing "can attract problems like molestations" which police find out about too late to deal with.

"I feel that wearing bikinis should be banned on the beaches," he said.

"We should not allow such types of people to enter public places."

Dhavalikar, a member of the local Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party which is an ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had early sparked criticism for saying girls going to pubs in short dresses did not fit in with local culture.

"What will happen to our Goan culture, if we allow this? The scantily-dressed girls visiting pubs project wrong culture and this should be stopped," he said.

Members of the rival Congress party in Goa responded by sending a pink skirt to Dhavalikar, saying they would not tolerate "moral policing".

Goa's long sandy beaches have been a haven for tourists for decades, but the state has cracked down on its nightlife over the past few years after a series of high-profile crimes including the rape and murder of British teenager Scarlett Keeling in 2008.

The state last year rejected a proposal for India's first Playboy club on one of its beaches and announced a ban on dance bars.

BJP should concentrate on development work instead of pursuing RSS agenda :hitwall:

. .
This is a violation of women's right, and should be abolished. Every women has the right to wear bikini, this minister should have other important agendas, not this boring work. Public works department, what's the job?

Ah, it's the same guy who called for a ban on skirts.

Though with the number of moral policing calls it looks like Islamists won't have to take over India. people like the minister above can impose moral policing on their own.

I mean they are all paranoid of an Islamist takeover. What's the difference between this and Islamic conservative societies.

Egypt wrecked it's tourist economy long before it's takeover by the military by imposing conservatism.

I hope to god Goa do not follow suit.

oh no.

anti bikini squad is in town.

I worry some TTP have fled from NWA to this area's beaches.

Roads, Bridges, infrastructure etc. He is not even the tourist minister, :tsk:

It's pretty hilarious because Goa relies on foreign tourism for a lot of it's income.

LoL. Enforcing morality should not be the government's job, because not all people follow the same set rules. Anyways, I don't have a problem with the minister's comment, because I'd rather not see Indians in bikini.

Hw abt these leaders focus more on punishing rapes witj capital punishmentw nd ensuring convictions take place rather than imposing moral bans.

Someone ask him if all the major rapes tht happened had girls cladded in bikinis?

Its nt the clothes. Yes he is right to some extent tht it does encite bt its nt the end solution.

Wats really wrong is the mentality. Tht wont go away with any number of bikini bans. There must b stricter punishments nd quick justice!

Yesterday was a talk of ban on mini skirts and today bikini-

Not a start Indians wanted! BJP should deliver what they were voted for....Short skirt, bikini and stuff are pretty much non-issues.

I think what he's really saying is short skirts on the beaches and bikinis in the pubs. A revolutionary idea, but will it work.

@Emmie

I am pretty sure the Goan Tourism Minister is not exactly thrilled with these comments either. Since that would mean it would kill off a lot of the business.

I don't know why BJP hates Muslims then. I am sure the Mullahs and the BJP leaders would get along fine discussing ways to control sexuality, impose dress codes and carry a regressive mindset.

There should be a cross border conference and they should exchange notes :)

If only that were the case
