ISLAMABAD: India may not be able to fully defend itself from a possible Pakistani nuclear strike in a conflict despite the country's heavy investments in developing anti-ballistic missile systems, a Russian nuclear expert has cautioned.

Petr Topychkanov, a senior researcher at the Carnegie Moscow Centre's Non-Proliferation Programme, said that despite large scale cooperation between India and Israel for the development of a ballistic missile defence system and India's efforts for acquiring S-400 defence systems from Russia, it is "very far" from defending itself from a Pakistani missile attack.

"Even in 10 years and with the huge budgets that India plans to spend on the development of nuclear weapons and capabilities, it is difficult to imagine it will be able to defend its territory from possible strikes from Pakistan in case of conflict," Topychkanov was quoted as saying by the Dawn.

Talking about India's candidature for the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), Topychkanov said the world will be cautious about India.

"The nuclear waiver given to Indian became a very important part of the lesson for the international community because Delhi did not give a lot in exchange, it didn't change policies and approaches," he said.

About Russia's policy for strategic stability in South Asia, Topychkanov said Moscow is interested in regional strategic stability and is working on avoiding crisis in the area.

He said despite longstanding strategic partnership with India, Russia was developing relations with both Islamabad and New Delhi.

India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed supersonic interceptor missile from a test range off Odisha coast on Sunday which is capable of destroying any incoming ballistic missile, prompting Pakistan to say that it would disturb the balance of power in the region and it plans to raise the issue at the international level.

The article is 6+ months old and this thread is just another attempt to pacify the bruised ego of some members who will now jump like a little kid at the sight of candy.

On topic : No country is completely invincible from ballistic missiles even with an ABM system coupled with multi tiered AA systems.

haha.. How can even say that??
India already have multi layer ballistic missile or cruise missile air defence inducted(AAD,PAD) which is continuously being upgraded & also has signed deals for s400.. India is now operating Barak 8 too..

All this non proliferation expert is implying that India can not safeguard itself with 100% certainty. Few Pakistani missiles can & will sneak into it, if Pakistan is "triad" compliant nation.

Mere 5 batteries of S-400 does not translate to any insurance policy against any future nuke attack on India. The "limited damage" will be done, if not extensive.

In any likely event, whether at the end of war or any surprise attack, Pakistan's goal would be to attack Indian surface/landmass with its nukes and not its Navy with Barak missiles.

The scenario is just as if you want to strike American aircraft carrier with volley of 64 BrahMos missiles - One would sneak in and cripple it.

So yes, this situation works.

For PAK , any Nursery kid say anything in favor of PAK and against India , he can become hi level expert ad dont you dare to challenge it and shatter PAK myth.

we have seen your so called Missile and Satellite imagery experts on your News channel few days ago..

We are in the process of developing BMD. At present we may not defend fully from Pakistani missiles, but in another 10 years or so, the BMD should be good enough for stopping 90% of Pakistani missiles.
