India is making dams on rivers flowing into Pakistan from westwards after eastwards. While pakistani people have neglected building dams and water reservoirs. All rivers lost, Siachin lost (biggest reservoir of fresh water in South Asia) . Where is Pakistan heading with PML-N and PPP in driving seat, i guess in "thatte kohh which". Else NASA have previoously reported that ground water level in Punjab basing is shrinking with 3 feets per year( 1 meter) due to over consuption in Indian Punjab, Haryana, Himashal and Pakistani Punjab.

The noony tunes are only bothered about roads, metro and orange line,
thats how these jahils give them votes. They don't think about anything
else, they did not learnt from the flooding in 2010, no dams, no reservoirs,
pak needs to store water for usage and irrigation of land.

.
Drinking water level is going down everywhere. In few years, we will be drinking desalinated water, where once we used to drink underground water and water from rivers.

The rain is low, the temperature is rising at alarming rate. And we let many rivers run into the ocean just like that.

They can make whatever we want, majority of Afghan rivers originate in Pakistan.

Dams aren't easy to build it doesn't help that everything for construction of Dams has to imported and that will greatly impact the import/export ratio and then people will complain about that. Further more you have the funding problem you need loans for these big project that will add to debt btw and then will cry about that. Then you have the Ethnicity and region problem for example Kalabagh...

so PML N is goign to win till they dry pakistan up..punajbis will vote for PML N till their in no "AAB" in punjab and sindhis will vote for bhutto till there is no sindh but only saline water
....
5 years and not a single storage project started, forget about completing...

WAPDA has preliminary designs for 8 major hydro projects, 4 of them in punjab province, 2 IN KPK and 3 GB
it has pre feasiblity for another 10 projects

govt can choose which ever it want it can choose big dam like bhasha(7MAF) or small dam like munda dam(1mAF) but hey who cares

The politicians on both sides need to look at the bigger picture. The underground water table will only last so long...and with such huge portion of it being used for agricultural needs its only a matter of time before its depleted to dangerously low levels. A proper sewage system(that collects rain water and other run off water), water treatment plants, and desalination plants(preferably powered by solar/wind/wave generators) are needed to tackle water shortages in the coming decades.

The rivers too need to be used in an amicable way...there's no point in fighting over it. The potential conflict(and war) over water can be avoided if the nations of this subcontinent start preparing for the projected water shortage NOW.

Modernising farming will completely eliminate the water issue in Pakistan. So much water is wasted and lost because of decades/centuries old techniques being used on such a large scale.

A good short term measure would also be to eliminate the need and capabilities of a water mafia in places like Karachi, that literally steal drinking water to sell on for extortionate rates.

It would take a lot of time and money to change the farming practices.

1) First and foremost there is a need to educate the farmers in Pak...this would be the first time consuming hurdle...

...the current farmer lets loose the water into his fields from a local tube well...this not only wastes water, it can cause other problems. If the water is salty(even little amounts can build up over time), the salt can build up in the soil reducing its fertility. If the water is not salty, still it causes the problems of run off. The run off water from crops where farmers use fertilizers(most of them do) is rich in nitrogen/phosphorus/carbon, which can cause algae blooms in lakes/rivers...the algae flourishes in this nutrient rich environment but die off quick and their decay depletes oxygen causing mass die offs of fish.

2) Once the farmers better understand...they would willingly want to use better practices that consume less water and lead to even better yields. Though they will not be so excited by the additional costs that would be incurred by switching to newer farming methods. This is where the government would have to fund at least some portion of the modernizing efforts...

...the thing about the current farming practices is that it's cheap...wasteful but cheap...this keeps the prices of the crops low(roughly the same as India/Bangladesh/etc). The current farmers are unknowingly worsening tomorrow for a better today...this may change when they are better educated. However they would still like to be competitive with the neighboring countries or expect a tariff on imported crops to still be competitive in the local market at least. Not to mention that without a major government push and funding only some well off farmers(chaudrys with acres of land) would be able to afford the more modern farming methods.

This second part would also be very time consuming since its gonna require massive changes...importing of machinery/change in infrastructure/changes in certain taxes and subsidies/etc. In short if the government starts this push today...it will start taking effect in a significant manner in about 20 to 30 years from now.

A good short term measure would also be to eliminate the need and capabilities of a water mafia in places like Karachi, that literally steal drinking water to sell on for extortionate rates.
I don't know much about this subject but yes I agree...any such illegal activity should be met with harsh punishments to make an example.
